Does anyone have suggestions for sociology departments that have a strong focus on historical/comparative sociology and political sociology? My specific interests are in education, identity, and social change in Latin America and Africa. Even more specifically, I'm interested in education and the truth and reconciliation process, and education and indigenous rights movements.

I studied Latin American history as an undergrad and thought that Soc. was the right field to go into for graduate school, but I'm having a hard time finding schools where professors are working on anything related to my research interests.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I don't work in those areas, so only two faculty members come to mind:

I don't think it would be hard to put together a committee with historical/comparative, movements, and education faculty members. Those are each huge areas. In that case, Wisconsin, CUNY, Indiana, Ohio State, New Mexico, NYU, and plenty of other schools would fit.

Who do you read? I think that's the best way to find schools. And check out the ASA sections in those areas. It may help you understand the academic movements. The sessions for the upcoming annual meeting might have some good info on what is going on right now.

You may also want to look into Latin American Studies programs, and perhaps geography programs. My former advisor wrote her dissertation on TRCs in South Africa and Guatemala. She went to Berkeley for a MA in LAS and then a PhD in Geography.
