"Thank you" to acceptance email?

I have no idea where to put this topic, so hopefully, this is appropriate:

I was accepted to a PhD program via email from the DGS, funding info and other documents attached. The DGS said he and some graduate students currently in the program will be in touch soon.

Do I need to respond to the acceptance email saying "thank you"? I have no clue what proper etiquette surrounding this is, but I initially assumed I would thank everyone and talk to them when they "get in touch soon". Help!

It's also important to note that I intend to accept this offer (at least 95% sure), but wouldn't say that until I had the opportunity to at least talk to people in the department a bit first.

I sent an email saying thank you, I'm still waiting to hear back from some other schools, but I'm really excited at the offer. They understand that most students need some time, so as long as you don't flat out say that you're accepting their offer, they'll probably understand. I think it's good to show some appreciation -- they picked you out of a ton of other applicants and probably spent a lot of time talking about how you can fit into the program.

Congratulations, by the way!

I don't think you necessarily need to say that you have to consider other schools (but it's not bad to say so either). It is implied! I think a quick email that just says "Thank you, look forward to hearing more from you soon" is great. Don't make it more than one sentence though!

If schools are basically sending you an email that says "Hey! We think you're awesome & will contribute enough that we're willing to throw money at resources at you for several years!" it's probably a good idea to show gratitude. :)
