Karoku_valentine Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Hi everyone, Who's attending the Graduate Information Day at Ohio State University on February 20th? I am attending and I was wondering who else is going.
bayessays Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) I was invited, but can't attend. If you or others could report back (in a PM, if necessary) your impressions of the department after the visit, I would really appreciate it. Edited February 10, 2015 by bayessays
Ergodic Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I will be attending. I will probably be there on 19th evening. Will post under this topic on what I thought about the department.
TenuousAtBest Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) I'll be attending the to-be-scheduled makeup day. Edited February 10, 2015 by TenuousAtBest

bayessays Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I'll be attending the to-be-scheduled makeup day. Have you heard about another later day to visit?
TenuousAtBest Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Have you heard about another later day to visit? I called the graduate chair's assistant and he told me they always hold a make up day later in the year. I want to say it's in March.
Karoku_valentine Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Good. I am a little worried about the weather. I have never been in a city with such low temperatures before, lol. Well, once I was in Berlin -8 (18F) and I survived.
Ergodic Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Here are my thoughts on the OSU Statistics department after attending their GID on Feb 20. 1. Lot of focus on Spatial Statistics and Statistical Learning 2. I quite liked the mix of domestic and international students in the department 3. I spoke to a couple of faculty members and they were really friendly and interested 4. They appear to have a good BioStat program and students have written thesis on many interdisciplinary topics like criminology etc. 5. The money is pretty good ~$2,100 to start with and it increases as you progress through the degree. I quite liked the department and their focus on both classical and Bayesian statistics. The bad thing is the weather but I dont know if it is going to be a deal breaker for me. washcross15 1
Ergodic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 What is the cohort size for OSU? I didn't ask that question particularly but I think we can guesstimate. They have about ~54 PhD student across the 5 years now and there were about 20 odd students at the information day. So, the cohort size should be somewhere around 10-12 if I am not wrong. washcross15 1
washcross15 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Thanks so much. I am planning on visiting OSU at their make up Visit Day. I've heard good things about Columbus, especially if you like chain restaurants. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2007/05/15/REST15.ART_ART_05-15-07_C10_OV6NGRN.html
Clarinetist Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Karoku_valentine, I noticed you were rejected from IA State. Did you post your application profile on here?
