PH823 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Anyone have any thoughts on CUNY Hunter College Program?
juilletmercredi Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hunter College has a great school of public health. It's more regionally respected than national - so lots of great connections within the NYC and the greater Tri-State area. I'm sure you could take it elsewhere. Lots of focus on community health and urban/minority health issues as well; health disparities et al. And it's super cheap!
elephantsinbelize Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I am a Hunter MPH alum and I honestly couldn't be happier with my decision. A huge part of it was financial for me but there were other reasons and compared to many of my friends that went to Columbia, I think I ended up with the better deal in some ways. This may be based on the strength of the policy and management department at Hunter (Wooldhandler/Himmelstein) but I also left without any debt! I worked full time the entire way through my degree, so I continued to earn raises/promotions thanks to my study. Other students who seemed to really get a lot of of the degree worked part-time and took on internships that were directly related to what they wanted to do after graduation. I loved that there were lots of nurses and other health professionals who carried on full time work and were in the same classes as me. I think it is well-regarded regionally though I think I could get a job throughout the country as required. It's a good fit if you want to work for the city or a health serving non-profit. Maybe not so good if you want to become a hospital executive. Peripatetic and SLPH2b 2
Peripatetic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I have heard from friends that they have a huge emphasis on social justice so that's a giant plus in my book. They also have great faculty. Plus, it's NYC. You will have a tons of options to network and find internships/jobs. elephantsinbelize 1
elephantsinbelize Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Lorna Thorpe is the chair of the EPI program. She's got great credentials nationally and now is in charge of the NYC HANES study - big deal! My friends seemed pleased that went into Epi and are now doing great things!
mochithegato Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I highly recommend the Hunter program if you plan on working in NYC after graduation. I had to choose between Hunter and Columbia's MPH program, and I'm glad I chose Hunter. No debt!
