pannpann Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I can't (I assume) be the only one who went boldly forth with my PhD. applications, only a BA to my name, only to be slapped back with the cold reality of just how difficult and exclusive this process decidedly is. In a panic of "I don't have enough options!" I submitted an MA application to the University of Vermont in February. Last week, four rejections deep, I threw my name in for an MA at Villanova. I'm sure I can't be the only one who regrets submitting to too few schools, or PhD. programs exclusively, so I'd like to create a masterlist (since I can't find one elsewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong) of MA or PhD. programs with late deadlines, for those of us who panic and decide to give ourselves just one more try, or maybe two. It won't help us this season, but it could likely help GC applicants next year. So far I have: SUNY Buffalo, MA: February 1 University of Vermont, MA: February 1 SUNY Binghamton, MA: February 15 Villanova University, MA: March 1
empress-marmot Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Hello! I have a couple programs to suggest, though I don't know how "prestigious" they are. They do, however, offer funding. Funding is good. Kansas State University has been discussed on the forums before, and I've heard nothing but good things about the program. The professors I've been in contact with are really friendly. Their deadline is Feb. 1st. Virginia Tech was recommended by one of my rhet/comp professors. Their deadline is Feb 1st as well. Colorado State was also recommended by another rhet/comp prof. Deadline Feb. 15th, but you have to mail in the application. Creighton U is a private Catholic college. I heard that the funding for English majors is quite nice. Deadline (for assistantships) March 15th, but they still had fellowships to award into April (at least, they did last year). I hope that helps, for those people who aren't on the lit track, or who don't want to move to the east coast. hypervodka 1
Appppplication Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Cal State LA English MA deadline March 15 Cal State Long Beach English MA deadline April 15 Cal State Northridge has an MA program in English as well but not sure about the deadline. Cal State Fullertone MA English deadline March 1. If you are a California resident these programs are really affordable, and many have great PhD placement records. Worth checking out.
pannpann Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Hello! I have a couple programs to suggest, though I don't know how "prestigious" they are. They do, however, offer funding. Funding is good. Yes of course! I meant to mention, UVM and Villanova both offer funding, I don't know if they offer it to all applicants but there are assistantships and fellowships that are offered each year. I'll definitely take note of schools which offer MA funding (and I feel like most schools that have MAs and not PhD. programs do). Thank you and Appppplication for the schools!
1Q84 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I'll throw in a mention of Loyola Marymount University. Private Jesuit university. They offer fully-funded through TAships and scholarships. Sorta kinda "down the street" from UCLA and has had some success placing students at NYU, Stanford (Chicano studies), and has a close relationship with UCI. They are unranked but US News considers them #3 "in the West" whatever that means. They have an impressively strong special collections at the library (lots of great medieval stuff here). Two rockstar scholars (which is pretty good for such a tiny program): Stephen Shepherd (Medievalist, manuscript studies) and Steve Mailloux (theory, rhetoric). Deadline for application: March 15 (but will consider applications afterwards on a rolling basis, space permitting). Any questions, feel free to PM me!
jhefflol Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 SUNY Binghamton had a Feb 15 deadline this year, which was extended to Feb 18.

I got my MA at Cal State LA. Just in the past three seasons people from that MA program have went on to the following Ph.D programs in English: UPenn, USC, UC Riverside, Cornell, UCLA (x2), and UCI. Each of those individuals had several options as well, from schools like Virginia, U of Chicago, Minnesota, Indiana, CUNY, and Princeton. This year one person is deciding between Berkeley Rhetoric, UCI, and UCLA. Another is deciding between NYU, UCLA, and WUSTL. Professors in the department give tremendous mentorship. And as students and former students, we always help each other out when we can.
emily.rose Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Maybe not as well known or talked about, but Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA offers GA's that fund tuition and provide a small stipend. If you don't get a GA position first year, you can apply again for the second year. Faculty looks great and from what I read about the program it sounds really thorough. There's also the possibility of a 12 month thesis assistantship for students in the last year of their MA. http://english.vcu.edu/ma/ Dr. Old Bill 1
emily.rose Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Oh and I forgot to mention that the deadline for a GA is January 15, but the general deadline is March 1.
SilasWegg Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Thanks for repping VCU on this thread, Emilyrose! I'm finishing up my MA there now. I don't know how well we do at placing in doctoral programs though. Of my cohort, I'm the only one who applied... And I got great offers from Rutgers, Texas A&M, Temple, and Delaware. Even though the faculty is amazing, it seems like most VCU English grad students choose not to go in to doctoral study.
