dragonage Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Hi all, I still have not heard anything from the Ph.D. programs I applied to. Someone at my university said that this is called a "soft rejection," as my application was probably not bad enough to be rejected immediately ("hard" rejection), but it just means I will be notified of rejection later on. Has anyone else heard of this "soft rejection" term? I think it makes sense, and I guess it is easier for me to move on if I think about it this way. Wishing the best of luck to everyone else out there!
HistoryMystery Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 It depends. Some places might do "soft rejections," others might have rejected and accepted the obvious choices first, and are now seeing who they should fill the last slots with.
EMGagne Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I haven't heard that term, but am in the same position. From what I've heard rejections just come in waves. Did you apply to clinical programs or pure research?

Hani2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 what is the point in that? I saw some universities sent acceptances and rejections come in waves.

They probably have a certain number of seats they are looking to fill each year. If admitted students are accepting their offers, the school may send out more rejections, based on some sort of ranking/order. If students are declining/not deciding on their admission offers, they may hold onto applications before sending out rejections. Think of it as an informal wait list. EMGagne and michigan girl 1 1

I guess I'm on an informal waitlist at UCLA. They sent some acceptences and some rejections. But i have not heard anything so far.
Abby_ Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Thinking of the small number of rejections that were sent out by some competitive programs, I don't want to raise my hopes! I'm expecting a mass of rejections, which means this wait doesn't necessarily mean I'm on the waitlist.. So, yeah it could be a soft rejection..
BruteForce Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I think it depends on what programmes you've applied. I do hear that some programmes only start sending out rejections slightly before 15/Apr. Maybe one possible solution is to check their website and find out when they will finalise all the applications. And email them if it has been a couple of days after their proposed date. I'm almost in the same boat... Still haven't got any decisions from CMU, which is supposed to come out before 1/Mar. I think I would email them if receiving no emails this week... sigh Good luck to all
