teadrinker789 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Hello! I browsed this thread but have not come across much information on social/behavioral health MPH programs. Would anyone be able to provide some insight (academics, reputation, accessibility of faculty and staff, school culture) on any of the programs listed below? - Columbia MPH (Sociomedical Sciences) - Johns Hopkins MSPH (Health Education and Health Communication) - UMichigan (Health Behavior and Health Education) - UC Berkeley (Health and Social Behavior) - Boston University (Social and Behavioral Sciences) Thank you in advance!
Peripatetic Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) I have the exact same question in the same department, although with Columbia, UC Berkeley, U Michigan, Emory, and UNC. It might come down to Columbia and Berkeley though... Edited March 9, 2015 by Peripatetic
Sabrosura Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) Since no one has replied, I'll give my two-cents about Columbia's culture though unfortunately it is not much. I went to Columbia's open house and went to speak with the professor who was representing the SMS department, as I was interested in applying there. I did not personally find him very approachable. Given that they were supposed to be "selling" their department since it was an open house, it makes me wonder what just how approachable he is under "normal" circumstances. Which professor did you meet? I have read similar things from other students. However, I went to their admitted students day on March 6th where I interacted with 6 professors and found them to be very congenial and interesting.
juilletmercredi Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I went to Columbia SMS for my PhD. This is an extremely broad question. Do you have more specific questions? Generally I found the academics to be excellent, the reputation to be excellent, faculty to be generally approachable and accessible, staff to be overburdened/overworked/often inaccessible, and the school's culture to be collegial and friendly but also fast-paced and intense.
