WsWilson Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I'm applying to Radford University in Virginia, for the MFA in Studio Art - 2D. I have quite a few reasons to like the program and the school. However, my goal is to teach. I should be able to get into a higher ranked school. Am I hurting my chances by going to a lower ranked college?
photochick Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I would say it depends on the strength of your teaching abilities and your artist CV
Leahdog Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 In my opinion and based on people I've talked to (art professors and curators), you are at a disadvantage going to a lower ranked school for becoming a professor, but it's a surmountable disadvantage. It might just take you longer than someone who goes to one of the top schools to become a professor. Four to eight years adjuncting and building up a resume teaching I hear would be normal. On the other hand, many of the top schools are very expensive so you'd have to take out loans possibly. Loans are a disadvantage and prison within themselves as well and you have no guarantee to becoming a professor. Yea, just my opinion, take it or leave it thepictureisstill and WsWilson 2
WsWilson Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Thank you! The loan issue is my biggest hurdle.
