skyistars Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Hey guys, I just accept from the offer from Stony Brook Genetics Program! I am worried about housing issue as well! Anyone who wants to find roommate? 27k stipend minus 3K to school every year is not that much at all.. I would be happy if the housing price is like around 600 dollars.... don't know that much about on campus housing.

Garyon Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 My letter said about 1400 per year ( roughly 700/800 per semestre if you look at the fee table in the link). Also guys, don't complain too much about the 27k.. Some of us will make almost 10k less

VulpesZerda Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 yep,yep it is 1400 per year.. I made a mistake.. sorry guys. But how are you guys going to find house off campus Try the above link for the Stony Brook off campus housing site. There is a roommate search and apartment listings. Other than that, Craigslist I guess. So far I've been in contact with a few people as potential roommates but nothing has panned out
Garyon Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I think it is a bit too soon to search for houses, isn' t it? I'm in touch with a couple of prospective Students from my cohort but i think we will start looking for other roommatea/ actual houses in a month or so

Adelantero Posted May 27, 2015 Author Posted May 27, 2015 I'm still hunting. I'm in Washington state for the summer and can't really get out to Long Island until just before the start of term, so it's going to be a bit of a struggle.
VulpesZerda Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I found something this weekend on Craigslist! My lease is all signed and everything. I'd recommend setting up some alerts and making a lot of phone calls. The listing I called for wasn't available but the landlord had other properties to show me.
Garyon Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 I've decided to look for houses with a future member of my cohort I met while visiting - we are ok finding other roomates too of course (I havelived with up to 9 people during undergrad so sharing is not a problem ), just not being alone in the search seemed nice - but we haven't really started our search yet. Untill know I've been submerged by International Bureaucracy, getting my VISA etc... The problem is that I am in Italy and she is in Russia and we won't be able to move 'till the beginning of August. Do you guys think it crazy to put off the search until then? I'd much rather prefer to see the place before signing a lease... Vulpes, It's great you have already settled this up! Did you see the place? I have been looking for rooms on Craiglist but they all list the move in date as June... Another thing (if you are not comfortable writing about it here, i can also send you a PM). How much will your rent be? I have to admit I haven't been able to figure out how much I'll make per month, once taxes, fees etc will be taken off my stipend. I'll have a TA of $17500 on 9 months (which I'm planning on dividing on 12 since I m not sure I will be able to count on additional funding over the summer), so how much do you people think I can afford? 600$+ utilities? More? Less? Any input will be much appreciated I don't know about you, but I can't wait too start the new year. I'll move there next week if I could!
VulpesZerda Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 Hi Garyon, I wouldn't wait til August myself because it sounds a little risky. Maybe you could have someone from your department check out a place for you? I hope some more August listing pop up soon for you! It might be worthwhile to call some of the June ones too, though. My rent will be $800 with utilities. I have the same stipend of $17,500 but summer funding seems likely for my department so I've been assuming something more like 20k.
sanaya Posted May 30, 2015 Posted May 30, 2015 (edited) $800 with utilities sounds reasonable! I agree with Vulpes; I wouldn't wait until August if you could work something out. Edited May 31, 2015 by sanaya
Garyon Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Thanks for your inputs! You're right of course! It is just that looking for houses across the ocean is so unnerving! I'll try to find a way! What about you sanaya, have you found anything yet? And guys, maybe we'll all meet during the orientation week I really can't wait to be there! I'm looking at my probable course schedule right now!
VulpesZerda Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I want to register for courses but I still have two holds on my account for my BA transcripts and the health papers. I hope I can clear those soon. I'm also very excited!
Garyon Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 (edited) yeah, I hate the health papers' stuff! It is taking me forever to get rid of it! I've just made the list fo courses I'd like to attend and I'm consulting with the program director. Edited May 31, 2015 by Garyon
sanaya Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 Not yet! We have an accepted students day kinda thing next week. Will start looking after I get an idea about the area maybe. Can't wait to meet everyone during the orientation week
Garyon Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Hi future Stony brookers. Quick question: are you done with your health papers? If so, did you mail them directly to the student health service? I read somewhere online that we could also fax them and I tried that, but the fax is aways occupied and they didn't answer my calls.
