Hi all,

In my attempt to boggle down how to go about this whole SLP business, I've stumbled across confusion with regards to certain science classes. I know ASHA requires certain things to become certified. However, I'm seeing a lot of people saying that schools require them before admission??? With regards to NJ, I see that Seton Hall requires them, but I can't find it with the others. Am I mistaken in something?

Also, what all ARE the courses? I took a stats course in undergrad and have AP credit for a biology course which allowed me to bypass it....what else do I need?

Thanks!

Hey the 2nd question down talks about the requirements:

http://www.asha.org/Certification/Certification-Standards-for-SLP--Course-Work-and-Knowledge-Areas/

You will need Chemistry or Physics AND a sociology class or psychology class I think.  (soc for sure is acceptable and pretty positive psych is as well for the social/behavioral sciences req)

I don't think you'd really have time to take the pre-reqs during grad school and often schools have different communication disorders requirements anyway so you would want to save any extra time you have to fulfill that Grad programs required courses to graduate.

(Example: school A requires you to take two phonetics classes(you've only taken one) where university B needs you to take anatomy (your program didn't offer it.)

You can the ASHA prereq's online or in person wherever is most convenient.

And idk if all schools require them before admission but maybe they value someone that has them done more than someone who doesn't if they have matching applications?  Something to consider.

Along the same line, does anyone know of a school where you can take physics or chemistry online without a lab?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you need a lab in this section in order to be certified by ASHA. So if I can get the required credits without the lab, that'd be okay with me. :)

SUNY Oswego has a 3 credit online Chemistry class.

Wait, so....when do you become certified? I had thought after you graduate you do a CFY. Couldn't I take a physics course during this CFY just as long as I do it before I apply for certification?

Also, anyone know about AP credits? I have AP bio credit....

Yeah you won't be fully certified until after the CFY year.  I don't have the information to back this up so could be wrong but I think they'd want you to take the class prior to graduating with a Master's degree.

I feel you wouldn't be eligible for the CFY mentorship without first having completed all academic courses that ASHA deems important to be a competent clinician.  I'm trying to find the information to back this up but it does seem vague.  I think you could get into Grad school without having them all done but I feel like they would need you to complete them before they will give you a degree.

If I find a source that backs this up I will post it.  I just think it makes sense for them to want the Graduate program to sign off on all things academic before you are allowed to practice your CFY.

Here we go:  The CF involves a mentored professional experience after the completion of academic course work and clinical practicum.

Well shoot. That's good to know. My undergrad was psych so I've got all the behavioral stuff covered and I took STA 100. As for biology, I have AP credit but it shows up as "LBL SL LL SCIENLAB" on my transcript. I wonder if that satisfies bio? And that said, am I missing anything in thinking I'd only need the chem or physics??

I'd double check for the AP (mostly b/c of the title) but if it is supposed to be college credit I feel like they should accept it.  I think you could pick a random school that offers a master's program and ask them.  They should have that information, i'm sure a lot of ppl have that question.

For undergrad coursework only Chem/or/Physics and you'll be all set for the "unrelated" classes as I like to call them haha.

Hm this is interesting. I guess I'll call a school up and find out if my AP Bio credit works. What's weird to me is that some schools want it DONE before you apply to them! Like Seton Hall, for example, wants all those ASHA prereqs completed before they'll let you in. I wonder why certain ones want that, and others don't...
