calmsw
Does anyone have any insight or advice on MSW programs in the Bay Area, specifically SFSU, East Bay or SJSU? I've read the websites, but they don't offer much information, and I'm not living in the area at the moment. I'm most interested in Family/Women/International focus, and would love to hear any advice on the various programs: specialties, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Obviously it seems that SFSU has a gerontology focus, but there may be other strengths as well. Thanks in advance!
pickfights
Hi! I'm in a similar boat. I'm planning on applying this upcoming fall. I am not too familiar with the programs, but I know SFSU is pretty competitive (more competitive than you would think a cal state would be) and has a pretty substantial social justice focus, which is great. I've also heard SJSU is great. Haven't heard much about East Bay.
sunnyskies13
I applied to all three, but have accepted CSU Fullerton instead. It depends on what type of social work you would like to do. They are all accredited so there's no problem there. SFSU seems more broad of a program as it is Individuals, Families and Groups but my undergrad advisor said they have an excellent program. SJSU and EB have more population specific programming like child welfare and mental health. I don't know much about EB or SJSU reputation but was told on another chat by a current SJSU student that they have had drastic budget cuts to the social work program this year. calmsw
Thanks!! I really appreciate what you've told me! I haven't heard back from SJSU yet, but between SFSU and East Bay it seems like SFSU is a stronger program - so it sounds like that's the best option for me right now.
