history? Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Yeah, but the percentages were almost identical: 2004 - 11.4% 2005 - 11.2% 2006 - 11.1%
cakes Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Yeah, but the percentages were almost identical: 2004 - 11.4% 2005 - 11.2% 2006 - 11.1% right, that was my point. fewer awards, but perhaps only because fewer people applied. either way, i wonder how the budget will shape up this year, and if there's any chance of the percentage awarded increasing. i think that the percentages vary by discipline, too. i'd like to know more about that (even though it likely isn't going to advantage my field any).
dwqkim Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 The NSF Web site will be unavailable due to maintenance work from 8:00 P.M. EDT Friday, March 30 until 6:00 A.M. EDT Monday, April 2, 2007. We apologize for the inconvenience. source: http://www.nsf.gov/
carpeimperium Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Aaaah, I want answers nowwwwww! I keep telling myself that the chances are so low it's not worth thinking about, and my gpa was a bit below their ideal (although my gre, letters, wtc. were through the roof) but damnit I want answers. Ok, so we know the % for awards is about 11 --- anyone know the % for HM?
marajade Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 I totally understand your pain... the waiting is killing me. I'm guessing we won't hear until next week, but I just want to know now. I'm afraid to admit that it is consuming a great bit of my thoughts when I should be working on my thesis. I felt like I put together a strong application, but I too worry about my undergrad gpa not being good enough. As far as the % for HM I think the top third at least get HM or awarded (that's what one of the former reviewers at my campus said). But it may vary by discipline. Good luck!
joninnyc2 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 WHY CAN'T THEY POST THE RESULTS ALREADY... Just wanted to vent, as I'm sure many reading this feel the same way
marajade Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Anyone want to make any bets about when we will hear? Maybe if I don't get the award, I can solace myself by correctly guessing when notifications go out. I'm guessing tomorrow, March 23 at around 5 pm EST, but that is probably just wishful thinking. Truly if it is not tomorrow I might go mad. Is anyone else consumed by the anticipation?
joninnyc2 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 last year was Thursday, march 30th if that helps... I'm guessing at least by or before March 30th again of this year though due to the site maintenance for nsf... but who knows. Should we start calling and asking when announcements will be made?
marajade Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 did any of you apply last year? this is my first time and my last year of eligibility, so it's a one shot deal for me.
FauxScientist Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Fastlane states that those who will not be granted the fellowship will be notified as promptly as possible. Has this been the case, or are we all waiting for results--up or down--on the same day?
marajade Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 as far as i can tell from this year and previous years, they are going to notify everyone at the same time (rejects, accepts, and honorable mentions). i do know that people who's applications are deemed ineligible (and therefore weren't considered) may have already been notified. this happened to friend of mine a few year's ago because her work was deemed to much of a medical nature.
kyounge Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I applied the last two years and both years I got an honorable mention. Not very much fun... This year is my last shot. A lot of people complained last year about not finding out that they were ineligible until the notifications came out. I can see what that would be frustrating since it takes so much effort to apply. Maybe that's why they are trying to let those people know earlier, but it still doesn't help if you've already done all the paperwork.
durkheim Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I say it will be March 30th. Unless its like Javits this year, in which case we may never know.
kkp! Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Called them today (3/23). "Winners will be announced within the next week / you will receive an email from us." -Mike
joninnyc2 Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 so it sounds like that means not today... bugger
kyounge Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Thanks for posting that you called. Now we can all stop incessantly checking email. ...until next week of course.
afamhistory Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Did you call about the Javits or the NSF? I am waiting to hear about the Javits.
Othello Posted March 24, 2007 Author Posted March 24, 2007 It's hard to believe the wait is nearly over. Not only is the application for the NSF far more brutal than any graduate school application (in my case, at least), but the wait is also months longer. Fortunately, grad school decisions were effective in keeping my mind off the NSF for most of that time. Is anyone here completely dependent on the NSF (or any other external fellowship) to fund their studies?
mos Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 THE RESULTS ARE POSTED ON FASTLANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Othello Posted March 24, 2007 Author Posted March 24, 2007 Wow, you're right. No award or honorable mention for me...
Othello Posted March 24, 2007 Author Posted March 24, 2007 It seems the site is now down for maintenance. I only hope that list wasn't complete/correct...somehow I doubt it. This must've been a slip-up. I thought the list wasn't unveiled until days after notifications went out. That would explain why the site suddenly went down.
FauxScientist Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Congratulations to the winners! I did not receive the fellowship, nor honorable mention. Thus another addition to the "learning experiences" column, opposite that of "successes." For all others in my position, never forget that it isn't personal; continue to pursue what interests you most and that know that happiness and does not require external validation! Good luck to everyone in academe, especially my fellow faux, social scientists.
marajade Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 wow, i'm still in shock that the names are actually up on the site, no email or nothing. but my intution about which day I would hear was correct. plus i got an honorable mention... but i'm still really disappointed congrats to those who won! for the rest of us, at least the waiting is over.
