  1. hahniel, I'd be happy to tell you more personal information about me, but let's do that through private messaging. If you want to study the electrical properties of inorganic thin films, McIntyre and Clemens are the profs to talk to. If you're interested in mechanical properties, speak with Nix and Dauskardt. Sinclair does a lot of TEM analysis of thin films. If you have an interest in organic thin films, you may want to speak with McGehee. If you like thin films research, Stanford is a good place to be.
  2. Hahniel, are you an admitted PhD student? If so, you'll at least be given a 1-year fellowship. That's what they provided me with, since NSF and NDSEG deemed me unworthy. After the first year, you'll be under an RA with your advisor. My research deals with studying the mechanical properties of thin film materials. What kind of thin films are you interested in? phsu, I liked Caltech when I visited, and I would have been happy to go there, but it was just too similar to my college (small tech school). The materials science department is small, and there isn't a whole lot of overlapping research between profs, so you really should be certain of who you want to work for. The profs were nice, and I got along with the grad students well. Eh, not quite sure what else to say. Caltech is a special school, and it's not a fit for everyone. I liked it, but Stanford was a better fit for me. Enjoy your stay in Pasadena!
  3. If you have any questions about MSE at Stanford, I'm a first-year PhD student there.
  4. It's about time! This was a great site before it got spammed to death.
  5. Yup, I accepted their offer last week. Congrats, and enjoy Berkeley!
  6. Hey, did you decide to attend Berkeley?
  7. There is absolutely no point in retaking the test with those scores... Bad idea. If you honestly think having scores higher than what you have will increase your chance of success, I'm quite certain you are mistaken.

    no, micah, it's overall. [edit]

    NDSEG 2007

yup. 0/2 for fellowships. At least I have a great funding deal where I'll be going.

    NDSEG 2007

    Bah, I'm rejected.

    NDSEG 2007

Please post here as soon as any of you hear something from them.

    NDSEG 2007

I'm counting the hours. Good luck, everyone.
  13. I've officially accepted Stanford's offer. Has anyone else made a final decision?
  14. Palo Alto is FAR from cheap! NYC is probably more expensive, but not by a whole lot. Stanford is a top school for CS. Ivy league means nothing for grad school; don't get sucked into that nonsense. Unless you feel you have to live in the city, I would definitely choose Stanford. I've been to both campuses and love them both, but a degree in CS from Stanford will carry more weight than one from Columbia.
  15. thecup, The open house was pretty standard - facutly presentations, faculty meetings, tours, etc. I would say most of the people I spoke to were leaning towards accepting Harvard's offer if they hadn't already made up their mind. As for me, I'm quite certain I'm going to attend Stanford instead for their materials science program. Good luck, and I hope you get my spot.
  16. The visit day for all of DEAS (applied math, applied physics, computer science, EE, etc) was a week ago. I'm sure you're either wait-listed or rejected if you haven't heard by now.

    NDSEG 2007

I stand corrected. There are rounds??

    NDSEG 2007

I'm anxiously waiting for the NDSEG results too. I'm sure we'll hear next week.
  19. It seems the site is now down for maintenance. I only hope that list wasn't complete/correct...somehow I doubt it. This must've been a slip-up. I thought the list wasn't unveiled until days after notifications went out. That would explain why the site suddenly went down.
  20. Wow, you're right. No award or honorable mention for me...
  21. WHAT. Let me investigate this...
  22. It's hard to believe the wait is nearly over. Not only is the application for the NSF far more brutal than any graduate school application (in my case, at least), but the wait is also months longer. Fortunately, grad school decisions were effective in keeping my mind off the NSF for most of that time. Is anyone here completely dependent on the NSF (or any other external fellowship) to fund their studies?
  23. One week to go... I'm getting excited.
  24. I got into Applied Physics at Harvard on Feb. 26th.
