doublehelixdoubletrouble Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Maybe we will hear tomorrow? If not, how is everyone getting ahold of Brandon over this time period? I couldn't find his email and went through NCER_Communications@epa.gov ... I never heard from them after I sent one out 12/15/15. Is it worth emailing him again?
biofilmsarego! Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 After the last communication I cant imagine getting any more news. At this point it's just a test of our patience/sanity. But if you want to go down that rabbit hole: jones.brandon@epa.gov
jsueltenfuss Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 From Brandon on 1/9/16 "I'm expecting for there to be a decision meeting in the upcoming week for award recommendations. We are planning on contacting those that are recommended the following week. Please accept my apologies for the delay and thank you for the patience."
doublehelixdoubletrouble Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 From Brandon 1/11/16 "We are planning on having recommendation decisions by the end of this week. The plan is to then notify the recommended applicants by early next week. Thanks for the patience." Seems to be on track so far... fingers crossed!
Salexmander Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Nope. Has anyone's grant.gov status even changed past "Tracking Number Assigned"?? If we don't hear anything by tomorrow, I bet it'll be delayed again due to the blizzard hitting DC. The government will likely shutdown Friday.
insane-in-the-membrain Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I haven't heard anything. What would be the next status after "Tracking Number Assigned"? My impression was that's as far as it'll go and that was going to be our only interaction with grants.gov although I could be wrong. As far as the weather, DC has a very established work from home program because of the traffic, so I would bet they work from home on bad weather days. It still might delay their notifications though, especially if they plan on calling. I just want to know already!

GopherBoy Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 The last vestiges of my patience and sanity squealing out of the holes in my head. No news here, either.
HamiltonEng Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 They remind me the Boy Who Cried Wolf one of Aesop's Fables.
HamiltonEng Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Is there anyone who has applied EPA STAR 2013 or knows someone who applied EPA STAR 2013? I know that eventually EPA STAR 2013 funds were provided to students in 2014 fall semester instead of 2013 fall semester. At that time, did EPA kept delaying their final decisions and changing the post on their website as they are doing now?
lava_you Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 @HamiltonEng If you look at the post from that year you see that they kept delaying the results over and over. Another issue was that they notified the recipients but then delayed notifying the rest of the applicants that they had not been awarded the fellowship. This was supposedly done because they were considered alternates, so it kept everyone's hopes up for another month. It is really unfortunate that a better/faster method of picking fellows for this fellowship has not been worked out yet, but then again it appears that only 1 -2 people are in charge of selecting the awardees.
bhub Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 When I applied for EPA STAR 2013, I got a decline packet in the mail in Mayor June-ish. ....Sometime soon after receiving acceptance of the NSF GRFP. In the packet I got my application scores/reviewer notes. It's hard to tell how they decide. I got the highest score from all reviewers but one noted I didn't have any publications during my undergrad. My mentor who has been a reviewer for this program said publications for undergrads isn't a reason to decline an application. Anyways, the point is many people submit good applications and get excellent scores but still get declined. Though I should also note the EPA STAR 2013 was due in November and many started out award notifications near the end of summer and throughout the fall..I think based on funding categories. But the EPA STAR 2015 was due in May? and you were supposed to know before Fall semesters? I was told by a reviewer that the format of selecting awardees is different and not to bother until the next cycle. I think in general this is bad if you're relying on funding to get into grad school. I was supposed to hear back by now from the EPA about a totally separate opportunity. I've been told by people who work at the EPA and professors involved in decision making that they are generally slow with everything because of funding cuts.
Amphibia4 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Anyone know if the streets are clear of snow in DC yet? I wonder if we haven't heard because they still can't get to work.
creynosaurus Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 The EPA was closed Monday & Tuesday and had a 3 hour delay Wednesday & Thursday. By now, they should be up and running.

biofilmsarego! Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 2015 STAR Fellows are anticipated to be selected and notified of their award recommendation by early February 2016 and receive grant funding by end of February 2016.
GopherBoy Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 lmao *tears* I really hope we don't have to re-apply to gain access to our results ;P
insane-in-the-membrain Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Has anyone noticed that the GRO applicants were notified of their award in December, but still have not received their funding? I wonder if that will happen to STAR awardees?
HamiltonEng Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 No surprise!! I am sure that they will not make decision during this semester.
