coyote_wrangler Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Does anyone have a sense for how many applicants are left? That's a piece of information that would've been really nice for them to send after the first round of rejections. I wouldn't even have known that they completed a round of rejections without this forum!
Amphibia4 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I was told we now have a 32% chance of success if 55 awardees are still funded (compared to 4% when we initially applied). So math tells me 172 of us are still waiting. coyote_wrangler 1
doublehelixdoubletrouble Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 @Amphibia4 where did you get this information? That is awesome to hear despite the 6 months of waiting to hear from them....
Amphibia4 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 @doublehelixdoubletrouble I got those stats in response to an email that I sent to the 2015fellowshipsrfa@epa.gov address in December.
bigcowphish Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 There was no STAR fellowship for 2014, and with EPA funding held at the same budget, we may not want to hold our breath for 2015 either :0( http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/263411-spending-bill-keeps-epa-funding-flat-in-2016
coyote_wrangler Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 @Amphibia4 'still' is kind of an ominous word. Did they imply they might give out less than 55?
Amphibia4 Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 @coyote_wrangler They indicated that that number could change (as was also suggested in the original RFA), but not whether it was likely to do so. I didn't press the issue.
doublehelixdoubletrouble Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Just received an email being recommended for the EPA STAR, hopefully will get the official documentation soon to make it officially official!
coyote_wrangler Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Just got a recommendation email as well!
CopepodCarotenoids Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Congrats!!! Thanks for letting us know it's finally happening! Which FOPs were you all in?
HamiltonEng Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Congrats Who send you the email? EPA or Brandon?
lucygoosey Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 congrats! i think if we didn't hear back we are not being recommended, looking at older posts. would have preferred knowing earlier than waiting until now
doublehelixdoubletrouble Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Thank you! I was in A3 and I received an email from Brandon. Another person in my lab has not heard back yet - she was in B2. They hold off so that if someone declines the award, they can offer it to another person (I think anyway).
1000thoughts Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Also received a recommendation for award around 5 pm- in D1.

GopherBoy Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Not today ... received it on the 4th, but I've been in Mexico with little service since then, so just now had an opportunity to share the news on here.
Turtlez Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 No sweat. It's good to know though. Thanks, and congrats again!
insane-in-the-membrain Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 How long do you guys have to accept or decline your offer? @biofilmsarego! @GopherBoy @1000thoughts @doublehelixdoubletrouble @coyote_wrangler
biofilmsarego! Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Unfortunately no deadline was given, which could further delay things for everyone involved.
GopherBoy Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 ^ ditto. You respond by accepting or declining the offer, but there is no deadline on that response.
1000thoughts Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Here is what the email says: "Congratulations! If you are receiving this email, you have been recommended for an EPA STAR Graduate fellowship from the 2015 STAR Fellowship announcement. IMPORTANT – You have not been awarded the fellowship, only recommended. Until you have official award documentation from EPA’s Grants office please refrain from making official announcements about your award recommendation. Please respond to this email with either of the following response options: – Yes. I accept the offer – please send further information to start my funding package process – No. I must decline the offer at this time because: - I have finished my graduate program - I have secured other funding - I have graduated with my degree If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. ============================ M. Brandon Jones"
insane-in-the-membrain Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Thanks for the information, @biofilmsarego!, @GopherBoy, and @1000thoughts! That's a bummer there isn't a timeline. Who knows, maybe they aren't picking alternates to save money. They truly need to reevaluate the way they notify applicants. Congratulations to you all! I am a failure
biofilmsarego! Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Thanks @insane-in-the-membrain, but I'm not counting my chickens until the check clears. Mixed metaphors. And don't beat yourself up over it...success and failure, much like everything else in life, seems to be pretty cyclical--be on the lookout for inflection points and until then, just try to enjoy the ride.
