Benefits of a M.A. Economics Degree

Hey All,

I came across this forum while doing some research.

Some background:

I was just accepted into USC's MA Econ program for Fall '15. I have been asking around and haven't had much feed back on my questions. Some of my questions go as follows:

1. What kind of employment am I looking at with an MA in Economics? (Undergrad was Econ as well from UCSB)

2. Does anyone with an MA in Economics have experience with the job hunt? If so, what job did you end up with? Was it what you wanted/expected?

3. As far as investment banking/hedge funds go, does anyone have experience in these fields with a MA in Econ? I know they look for MBA's, but will an MA in Econ help at all?

I just want to get some insight on the benefits of this degree. I know government work or research is an option, which I do not mind at all. As far as pay and overall positioning goes, I was curious if anyone has had any experience in the employment market with a master's degree in economics.

Thank you all in advance.

Best,

M

I am curious, and I don't mean to be a smart alec, did you consider that before applying for the program? You can always be a financial analyst at a bank or for the government with a MA.  PhD would be largely research from what I am reading.  I already work in that sector and we have tons of MA econ majors to answer your question.
