psydgrad Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 (edited) Hi, I am taking the Psychology GRE test in October this year (for Fall 2016 PsyD program). Other than the Kaplan, Baron's or Princeton, what are some specific books or resources that will help me prepare well for the test? Thanks! Jay's Brain Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 I think those are pretty great resources. To be honest, when it comes to the Psychology Subject Test, you already have a strong foundation if you came from an undergraduate program in psychology or related fields. Cracking open your Intro to Psychology textbook might already been a great complementary resource alongside the ones you have listed. Focus on the areas that you are less familiar/sure about and go from there. Just be wary of which sections are weighed the heaviest (have more questions) as well!I studied Neuroscience and Mental Health with a dose of Psychology courses, and was able to do well on the test in about a month of preparation (right after my General GRE too!)Good luck!
transfatfree Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 I took it last April but only had three days for revision. DO start early!I used Kaplan and Introducing Psychology by Schacter et al (I got Princeton as well but didn't have time to read it). I spent most of my time reading the introductory psych book but skipped a few sections that I thought were unimportant, which proved to be a mistake. FINISH it for real. I only had time to read the first few chapters of Kaplan. The MC questions are useful for fact checking (even though they are a bit easier).I second Jay's Brain's suggestion on the heavier sections. If you have time, study them in greater depth because the really trivial questions seem to come from those sections (probably because they need to set more questions for them). Review your lecture notes and textbooks on those topics if you have time.
SocialPsychYear2 Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Crash Course: Psychology on YouTube may also be helpful as a review. There are 40 videos total on intro psych topics.
Analyticchic Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 (edited) I'm in the same boat as you, taking the psych subject October 24th. I have a Kaplan book, getting a intro psych book, and I'm also using an app called GRE psychology by brainscape I downloaded from the app store on my iphone. It presents flashcards on the history of psych and it's subjects(Learning, memory, thinking, sensation/perception, Neuroscience, Research/Methods, Social Psych, Language, Personality, Developmental Psych, Psychopathology(Clinical/Abnormal Psych), and Ethology), you have to unlock levels(history, learning, and memory are the first 3 levels that are unlocked) but it's like a psych intro book on the go. It was free and I love it. I hope both of us do well and get into our programs Edited August 24, 2015 by Analyticchic
