Sorry, I was somewhat unclear. I was definitely rejected from JHU, but most others have not come back to me personally. However, looking at the survey results, the acceptances for Cornell, Chicago, NYU, WUSTL and Princeton have already gone out. But, I may be wrong, and they may still accept people in the second wave of acceptances. Again, I am sorry, my personal assumptions may have unintentionally and possibly unnecessarily made you worry that you are rejected. I wish you luck that Princeton will accept you!

Don't worry about it. I was just wondering if they had contacted you directly. I had called the department office last week and they told me that they weren't releasing admits until this week. So i assume that the 2 notifications of admittance posted were from profs and not the Politics department. So good luck to both of us!

i think the assumption about columbia is probably right, and it seems the same is true of princeton. maybe they do have second waves of acceptances, though i'm pretty sure columbia is completely done. i've heard MIT is done as well, having mailed out overnight acceptance letters last week.

Yeah soooo i'm still waiting for WashU & Princeton & can only assume it's a no. Blah! I also got "quasi-rejected" from NYU, where I am currently an MA Politics student. I emailed our admin guy and asked "when will i find out?" and he wrote back, "admitted students already did find out" just like that...how rude!!! That was 2 weeks ago and i have yet to receive a formal rejection. God at this point i'd sell my hair for a waitlist. It really is like winning the lottery right?! I mean, we all have stellar qualifications. Oh well. Waaaah

yeah WashU is done. I went there for undergrad and obviously that didn't matter!!! lol. I was accepted w full tuition & stipend to Colorado but can't go...cant get a transfer from work.  Rejected from: NYU, Columbia, Yale, and CUNY!!!! <- my back up. I called and they were like, oh, you dont have enough poli sci background- i was like but i have a BA and MA in poli sci... then the woman was like, oh you probably dont have enough languages- i was like, i speak 3... crap utter crap!!!

about CUNY - don't feel too bad. they are pretty shady w/ their funding (for those who they actually do fund). if you're one of the lucky ones who is funded, instead of getting to TA courses for your money, you teach classes. which in concept is cool, but is a shitload of work which you should be putting into studying for your comp exams, etc. basically, you're an adjunct at about a third of the cost to CUNY. it's a pretty decent program otherwise, but that is a major issue.

Has anyone heard from Georgetown either with an acceptance or rejection? Also, to the person who is waiting on an "official rejection" from the University of Chicago: you may not be rejected if you haven't heard yet... I think they are waiting for people from the first wave of acceptances to reject so that they can offer those spots to others on the unofficial waitlist. On another note, what are everyone's thoughts regarding University of Virginia, University of Chicago, Georgetown, and Washington University in St. Louis? How would you rank these programs?

Oh, sorry, it was a letter in the mail.

Fantastic, now I have to trust that my letter would go out at the same time AND [more improbable] that I can trust my local mail deliverer. On my mark start the marathon of nerves...go!

Well, I hope you get accepted!

U Chicago is ranked (according to US News and World Report) as a top ten dept. WashU is in the top 20. UVA and GT are somewhere in the mid 30's. However, I don't put much stock in the US News rankings (as they are two years old and, I think, based mostly on faculty perception of reputation)

I applied to UVA and Chicago. I was accepted to UVA, and I am very much considering the school since it is very strong in the subfield I want to do. I have not heard from Chicago and like one of the posters above, I am expecting a ding. I assumed that they made all other offers already.

Congrats if you got into those schools you listed! You have very good options.

some have been notified by georgetown, but the grad coordinator told me they're basically going thru stacks of applications, and that the biggest chunk of acceptances will go out next week. i'm still waiting on them as well. as for the other places - depends on what your subfield is and who you want to study under. chicago is probably the elite school out of that pack, though i hear it's been slipping lately - still hard as shit to get into, though! the other 3 are pretty similar in terms of rep and rank (15-30 ish), though again, very different for subfields ie uva is much better for american politics than its overall rank, as are gtown and gwu for IR.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Harvard vs. Yale for American Politics? Also, Harvard vs. Yale overall, as I am not 100% sure that once I get to grad school I will actually do American Politics.

I have to make a similar decision, only with my field being Pol Theory at both Yale and Harvard. Any thoughts on that choice are appreciated.

I am going to the open days in April, you too, ajc123?

Well, obviously there is your subject of choice: one of the might be better than the other, even if the other is in some sense better overall.

Anyway, from what I can tell, Harvard would be better. [You should also take a glance at, say, the Philosophical Gourmet reports since there is overlap in theory with work done in pol philosophy].

This is also a very informative source of information:

It's a pretty wide-ranging affiar about departments in general; some rumors here, some rumors there, discussions about canon, etc, but also a good amount of discussion about which departments are best. I believe Harvard was granted superior placement over Yale in part thanks to the size of the faculty.

Does anyone know anything about Penn's polisci program. I'm admitted and they have some really great people for my specific interests, but I was curious if anyone has heard anything about the quality of the program in general.

When did you hear from Penn polisci07? I am still waiting. Penn has a mixed history. They went through a bad time in the 80s and have been suffering since. But I heard they are going through a sort of reinvention. Lots of new professors, etc.
