alejandro112 Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Hey everyone! So today I got my first acceptance ever so I was pretty excited. I got accepted to Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond and got an interview for University of Louisiana at Monroe. However, the excitement is kind of gone now that I have seen on google that both cities have pretty bad crime rates. Does anyone have any insights into these cities or into living in Louisiana in general? Thanks.
Kanga Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Caveat to my comments.....I am not from Louisiana, and in fact, have only been there three times. But, your profile indicates you are from San Francisco. On neighborhood scout, the crime index for San Francisco is a 3 (100 is best). Hammond is a 0. (lower than SF, but not by too much). Monroe is a 1.I went to college in a city that had a high crime rate. I lived near the university, and didn't go out in the areas where the crime rate was high (especially at night) and never had an issue. I also never knew anyone who was a victim of a crime. If it were me, I'd go to the city-data.com website and ask about where to live/crime/student life on their forums. They have forums for each state. alejandro112 1
Eigen Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I can't think of any measure that would put Monroe or Hammond into a high crime rate. New Orleans or Baton Rouge, maybe, but Hammond and Monroe are both pretty laid back small towns. alejandro112 1
alejandro112 Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Yeah. Thanks both of you. I freaked out when I saw all of the numbers on neighborhood scout are way higher than average, but compared to cities nearby they aren't too different. I'll just be careful and look for a place in a good neighborhood. I still have to wait to hear back from other schools though.Thanks.
