  1. I did not minor, but my university also tried to encourage us to minor in special education. That might have been because the sped program did not have many students. I heard contradictory things regarding a minor. Some teachers said it looked wonderful on an application and others said it would not make difference. I do not personally believe it made a difference for myself. I tried to be involved in NSSLHA. I would volunteer with other students every now and then, but I was not an officer. But it is great to have some sort of volunteering experience, but I felt like if its not an ongoing thing, its barely worth mentioning on an app. The officer at my own school actually did not get into the school's grad program, so its not a golden ticket by any means and I don't know if just being a member is that helpful. I also commuted as an undergrad and I remember the sour looks when I would mention I would not be minoring. I honestly wouldn't sweat it. I barely mentioned volunteering on my SOP and don't remember if I mentioned NSSLHA, but only because I had a job with relevant experience. Some schools do take volunteering/leadership seriously. One app I saw wanted a list of all relevant volunteering experience. However, my work experience and work as a clinical aide on campus likely boosted my application. Good-luck with applications! I'll be attending Nazareth College this Spring, let any of us know if you have questions.
  2. Hello everyone. I will be attending Nazareth College in New York and I will be doing the advising/orientation on Skype. I talked to the director for maybe 15 minutes on the phone and because I live 3000 miles away, this would be the best option for me. She asked if I had any questions about the program, but I couldn't really think of any on the spot. What are important questions to ask the director during an orientation/advising session?
  3. Thanks does anyone know what they pay? I am trying to figure out if I am going to need a co-signer for loans. Thanks!
  4. Do you get paid once you graduate and start doing your fellowship? I was just wondering if SLPs get paid during the residency as I am trying to figure out how much money I am going to need to borrow. I heard audiologists make on average 40k during their residency (in California), but that is 12 months I believe and not 9. I will be attending school in New York. Thanks
  5. Yeah. Thanks both of you. I freaked out when I saw all of the numbers on neighborhood scout are way higher than average, but compared to cities nearby they aren't too different. I'll just be careful and look for a place in a good neighborhood. I still have to wait to hear back from other schools though. Thanks.
  6. The GRE sucks, but there are lots of books and online courses and materials to help you out. So I would really consider retaking it. Schools sometimes have a cutoff and it would usually be around a combined verbal and math of 300 or higher. As for backups, you could become a nurse. Some schools have an entry level master's degree nurse intended for people with zero experience, but they may also require you to take microbiology and other science courses. Same with becoming a Physician's Assistant (which also requires clinical experience.) Your GPA and stats do look really great. So I would just focus on the GRE.
  7. Hey everyone! So today I got my first acceptance ever so I was pretty excited. I got accepted to Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond and got an interview for University of Louisiana at Monroe. However, the excitement is kind of gone now that I have seen on google that both cities have pretty bad crime rates. Does anyone have any insights into these cities or into living in Louisiana in general? Thanks.
  8. I feel the same way. Seems like most schools (for the spring) take about 2-6 weeks after receiving all of your documents. Most schools with early Sept. deadlines notify around Oct 15.
  9. I have been feeling the same way too! I applied, the website states they accept 25-30 people each semester for a total of 50-60 a year. I would think it might be easier, hopefully they get less applications in spring. We hear back by Oct 15. Good luck!
  10. Hey everyone. So I am mainly applying to schools that are many states away because few programs allow applications in the spring and because California is very competitive. I have heard that schools don't always take applicants like myself seriously because they are afraid that I may transfer out after a semester or two. What can I say to ensure schools that I am a serious applicant? And where could I stick that in my letter of intent? Thanks
  11. Thank you. yeah ill send em all that i have. I just didnt want to waste time driving and forget something, plus I am short and time and the prof. is only there thursdays. Thanks again.
  12. Hi, I know there is already a thread kind of on this topic, but.... I want to know a little more specifics. So my university is about an hour and a half away and a teacher asked me to leave documents at the clinic so he can write my letter of reference. I understand that all of the schools I am applying require one big packet to be mailed with all of the supporting documents. But what do I leave my professor? I just want to be sure since I will be driving there tomorrow and I dont want to miss anything as it takes over 3 hours to complete the trip. I believe he just fills out the verfication forms and signs it, writes his recommendation, maybe using an extra page if needed, and then signs over the seal of an envelope. Correct?? And then I include 3 of those letters of reference in my big packet (with everything else) I send to each university right? Thanks
