Hi Everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying for the MIA at IHEID. I will be applying for full funding, I would be happy with just living expenses though. I am looking for people who are also applying for the same program and also those who have applied earlier and been accepted with full scholarship. In addition, I had the following queries;

1. How much does the letter of recommendation matter? Does it have to be by a well known scholar in the field of International Relations? or is it alright if it is just someone who has worked with you and knows your competencies on a personal level?

2. Does the scholarship application depend primarily on financial need? Do they give out scholarship applications with the early bird admissions decisions or do we all have to wait till march?

3. The GRE isn't a prerequisite for the MIA degree is what I have gathered but I would like to be informed otherwise if mistaken.

4. I am also looking for someone to get nervous with me (lol). Do reach out if you read this and are in a similar situation!

Knock!Kock! Even I am applying for IHEID this year :D ... Still working on my SoP and Letter for financial aid, so i believe we can be of help to each other. Also as far as referees are concerned , you can get the letter of recommendation  from your college professors...

Hey guys! I'm also planning on applying, though I'm unsure if I can make the early registration deadline. I've been perusing online since summer for any and all information relevant to IHEID, so what I've gathered from there so far about your inquiries is that:

1. The most important part about the letter of recommendation is that it should be from someone who knows you in an academic capacity. A professor of IR or similar fields would be more relevant than say, a language or mathematics professor. Beyond that I assume regular LOR standards apply.

2. All scholarship decisions are sent out in March, and I think it's a combination of need/merit based.

3. Nope, no GRE scores necessary! Otherwise I'd be freaking out about preparing for that right now ^_^ I get the impression that European universities don't really require GRE scores, with the exception of the UK (though if you do have good ones, it probably won't hurt!)

^ In fact I'm even thinking of forgoing the TOEFL and submitting proof of past schooling in English, because paying $180 for a test to prove that I know a language I've spoken for 10 years is... ridiculous at best. I've briefly studied at Sciences Po before (license, not master's) and my application was accepted sans TOEFL or SAT scores, so I'm hoping for the same from IHEID as I'm on a tight budget.

4. Yes, let me join in on all the nervousness! Haha. I haven't even started drafting my SoP yet so this shall be interesting.

Hey! I knowww! I am freaking out myself! If things work out we may be classmates haha.

There's hardly anything online about the IHEID applications. It's all pretty much general stuff. Which stage of the application are you at?

Wait! So whom do you get the proof of past schooling in English from? I've only ever studied in English my entire life. Man this is all so stressful!

And yeah, it's all so expensive.

Hi guys! I am applying to the MIA as well. I am almost done with everything, still working on the SoP though. Do you guys think the Committee will be pretty strict with the 800-word limit? Cause I'm little beyond it and still have a couple of things to say. Good luck everybody! ;)

Hopefully !

I've been looking at other threads and i'm even more nervous now. The people who got admitted to the MIA seem to have such strong backgrounds, it seems quite competitive! Arrrgh, I'm going crazy hahha.

Well i've finished my SOP, and now just waiting for my Uni to give me a provisional transcript showing the grades i've obtained so far this semester. So won't be able to make it to the early deadline :(

What about you ?

How did you find out about the other people who have been admitted? Could you link me to the thread? Although it will probably only make me more nervous haha.

Hey! I was well above the limit at about 1100 words but then came across this threatening story about an application being rejected for having too many words and then cut it down to size. It's about 790 words now!

Submitted my application a minute ago, just in time. Still waiting for a referee to submit his letter.

Good luck everybody! ;)

Yes. The deadline is the 15th. However, I wanted to get access to the follow-up module and check whether the Institute had received the reference letters. This is why I submitted my application before the very last day.

Su_nayana, my SOP also ended up at 790 words! Highfive for barely making the word limit :P

Hey Erminia, that was a pretty great idea to have access to the follow-up section. Was anyone else a bit confused by the way the application form was set up? I asked my referees for their reference letters ages before I paid my application fee and actually had access to the reference section... also trying to get some of my pdfs to below 2MB was a struggle -_-

Anyways, my application is in as of last night but this morning I woke up and saw one of my reference letters still hasn't been submitted! Oh the horror... if it's uploaded on the 16th, do you guys think that would still qualify me for making early admission deadlines or nah?

Hope you all made it on time!!!! All the best to all of you. I pray we all make it with full funding! :D

Yes they would, since the deadline is 21st novemeber. Even I am waiting for the same. I hope they submit my letter by today ^_^

Su_nayana, fingers crossed! ^_^

Hargun, I hope that is the case! My professors did tell me that, but I thought maybe there was just a 1 week window for referees to submit letters... not considering the actual 11/15 deadline.

The good part is all my materials are finally complete. Guess now we wait for January. (This should be fun...)

Taeyeon, in the PDF attached, it is clearly stated that the very last deadline for referees to submit their letters is November 21st. I found this file on my follow-up module, recommendations section. You do not have to worry then!

Whew, thanks Erminia! I've been paranoid all this time for nothing :P

Just saw the status is changed to "application received: complete." I was so sure they were gonna demand more documents, especially regarding proof of studies in English. All I have there are my transcripts for grades 6-10 in the US and an undergrad semester at Sciences Po (with some awful marks). Back to the waiting game now!
