Just got an interview from UCLA !

Thank you for your application to UCLA's Chemistry and Biochemistry department. Our faculty have reviewed your application and the department is considering you for admission into our doctoral program. Before making a final decision, we would like to set up a video live session through Skype to assess your English language ability. Please list 3 different times that you are available for a 10 minute video session starting Wednesday, January 6 through Thursday, January 14th, 8:00am - 11:30am and 12:30pm - 4:30pm Pacific Standard Time, excluding Saturday and Sunday. The video session will be with a Graduate Student Affairs Officer from the department.

When responding with your availability, please make sure you note the time difference and respond in pacific standard time. Furthermore, please include your Skype user name as well as your TOEFL total and speaking score.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

TongueSten, thanks for mentioning that UW's emails was flagged as spam. I might not have found it for quite a while otherwise!

Found mine in the spam too this morning :). In the acceptance letter, it mentioned students will have to pay University Fees ($1,300) ? Isn't that waived usually with programs or am I not remembering correctly. I don't remember seeing that with other schools.

I know a few grad students at UW-Madison. Apparently you do have to pay the university fees. I was told it's not a major expense as long as you plan accordingly when budgeting your stipend.

Thank you for the info. And is the stipend generally enough? Certainly money isn't the biggest factor at all, but their stipend seems to be lower than others + apparently having to pay health insurance premiums and the fee which other schools tend to reimburse. But overall there seems to be a lot of good research, so I'll try to plan for the visitation dates.

Everyone I spoke to said the stipend is more than sufficient. The cost of living in Madison is pretty low especially considering what I'm used to (being from a large city on the East Coast), but you might see it differently depending on your own experience. I have heard small grievances from students, but none of them had to do with stipends/funding. But yeah, they're a powerhouse in my field, so I'm excited for the visitation weekend.

Congrats Kaffee! I loved the summer I spent at Northwestern, really hoping to hear from them soon. Did they say when official information would come out? I've been refreshing the admissions tracking page fairly regularly.

Thanks! Actually my tracking page still says 'admission not yet rendered' so I wasn't really expecting a call. It was mentioned that official letters would come in the next few weeks (if I heard it right) so I wouldn't worry yet!

I emailed Stanford about that incomplete thing. They said they didn't know why my profile said incomplete, but it was definitely marked as complete on their system. I'm also waiting for Stanford on synthetic Org Chem.

Thanks for the information. I will send them an email just to notify them about this.

I got my acceptance from UC Irvine last Wednesday, and my acceptance for UC Davis and UT Austin yesterday.

Congrats on those acceptances! I'm crossing my fingers for Irvine, but at this point its clear I wasn't one of their top choices. I've heard they highly value research experience there, which may explain why they weren't eager to accept me. How much research exp do you have if you dont mind me asking?
