I absolutely dread paperwork and applications of any kind, but am finally getting started on my apps now.  I have my three letter of rec writers lined up, so at least I did that early.  At any rate I was wondering how far back I should go on my resume?  As an older student my resume goes back almost as far as some of my classmates' births lol!

Any suggestions?

Usually resumes are best kept to a page so that will limit what you put in. It's not a vitae (cv) which is really long and all inclusive. I would focus on your most relevant experience and the most recent too. Mention college degrees and maybe volunteer experience or relevant skills. Be brief and you can fit more in. Overall the most relevant experience is best if you have it. I wouldn't worry much about other stuff if you have that to mention. Hope that helps? Good luck!

The one-page guideline is for people with little work experience, like recent college graduates, or people who have been in the workforce for less than 5 years. I would include all your relevant experience, but remember that ad comms have to read approximately one billion applications, so I wouldn't go over 2 pages.

I did a hybrid resume where I highlighted the relevant recent volunteer experiences but did briefly list my older employment (my last paid job ended in '05 when my 2nd child was born) just so there wouldn't be any gaps between when I finished my 1st bachelor's and today.

i would keep it to 2 pages.

if i may hijack the thread just a bit, do you guys think that lifeguarding/teaching kids swimming, aquatic supervising is worth putting on my resume? i only left it because of the kids involved in swimming lessons. should i keep just that or get rid of the whole thing? i was thinking aquatic supervisor kinda shows leadership skills...

anyway thoughts?

I think it would depend on what else you are including.  If everything else really overshadows that experience then leave it off, if that makes sense.  Or if you already have an extensive list, leave it off for brevity.
