No SSN Card

Recommended Posts

I worked in the US at a summer camp a few years ago (2012) and was issued a social security number then (not that I paid taxes on my $700 for 3 months work). However, I never received a card with my social security number on, the only way I know it was when my tax form came through in the post. I was just wondering what the deal would be with getting a social security card once I'm in the US, as I haven't technically lost it I just never got one.

You don't need the card, really. You just need the number. You're not supposed to carry the card around with you (in fact, you're supposed to keep it somewhere safe in your home) and I can't remember ever having to show it to anyone. If you still think you want one, check out the information here: (select "adult", "replacement", "noncitizen")

Just to add to what fuzzy said, if you did get the card, you'll find that the card itself tells you not to take the card with you and to write the number down and keep the card in a safe place! I think you are only allowed something like 10 replacement cards in your life.
