Takoyaki7 Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 I'm taking the GRE Math Subject test next week because a couple of my schools require it. I don't know if I should send it to my other schools while I'm at it (would Stats programs that don't require it even care if I did?). I have no idea what Stats programs expect on the Math subject test. What would be a good enough score worth reporting to schools that don't require it (and actually have it make some sort of difference)? I was thinking anything above 75th percentile would be worth reporting but I don't really know... "75" honestly doesn't sound that impressive... What do other (Stats) people think? mtey 1
mtey Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I'm so interested in the same question too... So anyone??? I believe that the only universities that require the test are Stanford and UNC sooo if I've screwd the test up I'm not sure whether to send the scores or not.
wine in coffee cups Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I'm also curious. Is there a rough threshold at score-optional programs (most everything besides Stanford and UNC apparently) at which your score can hurt you if submit it? I'm quite unsure what the lay of the land is because I've actually known people with middle-of-the-pack GRE math subject scores (50-60th percentiles) who got into respected pure math PhD programs (e.g. UCSD, Minnesota) without having a recommendation from a Fields Medalist or anything like that. I would guess that statistics programs would be even more lax about the math GRE? I only got 63rd percentile, for what it's worth, and I'm not sure if I should be submitting that score to score-optional programs when I apply next year or not.
mtey Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hi, I guess it's worth noticing that UNC does not require the GRE Math scores, it was my mistake. And about the scores, I don't know, nobody seems to know exactly what score is worth sending but some people say that above 80% is OK for stats programs.
kowtown Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I just happened across admissions statistics for U. Penn's math program. If they have similar data for the statistics program I am not aware of it, but I imagine the numbers would be comparable. The pertinent information is: Scores on the Advanced Math Subject Test of the GRE should be at least 750, though applicants with somewhat lower scores may be admitted if the rest of their application is sufficiently strong. The average GRE scores of the students who entered our Ph.D. program in the recent past were: Verbal: 597; Quantitative: 789; Advanced Math Subject Test: 820.
mtey Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Yes I am aware of these statistics but since the majority of schools do not require the GRE Math I don't believe that it would be comparable, because the GRE Math is not a crucial factor in the evaluation of an applicant... Anyways it is out of our hands now.
