ChasingMavericks Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Hey all! I'm headed to Minnesota in a week to visit two schools. I have everything taken care of for the visit, but advice on how to dress for the cold would be really helpful! It's been a few years since I lived in a cold and snowy state, so I only have the minimum cold weather attire. How much should I layer? What should I expect?
rising_star Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 How much you should layer really depends on personal preference. If you're not used to cold, then silk longjohns are a good idea since they'll give you warmth without being bulky. Good quality, waterproof boots would also be helpful. If you don't have a solid winter coat (down is wonderful), you might find yourself chilly. I would probably wear a tank top, long sleeved thin shirt, dress shirt, blazer/jacket, and then a winter coat. But, I also get cold pretty easily. One tip is to check with your friends to see if they have anything you can borrow. I've borrowed clothes from friends in the past for campus visits and it's been a great way to save money and have what I need at the same time.
jenrem Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 It's likely going to be below zero next week so layering will be key. I wear thermal running pants underneath my regular pants and a sweater underneath my heavy winter jacket. Don't forget a scarf, gloves, and hat, as those are also key to staying warm. Bring shoes that you won't mind getting ruined in the snow if you don't have boots. Make sure to wear thick, wool socks too.
knp Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Double pants! Double pants! (As a woman, even without thermal underwear or whatever, I always have leggings on hand to serve as the under-pant.)
