IamAli Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I am a senior in a csd undergrad program. How do the grad programs assess your application if you are still in the process of taking 2 undergrad speech classes? Do they just base their decision on how you have done in the previous 7 courses?
SLPgradstudent Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Yes. They base their decisions on your performance on the CSD classes you've already taken, in addition to your GRE scores, personal statement, letters of recommendation, overall GPA, etc. They can't know how you might do in your remaining classes, so that's not really a factor.
MarkMc Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Yes. And keep in mind that your recommendations will be important, especially if they are coming from a chair of that department or whomever is teaching your class. Any decision will have to be based on coursework completed, GPA, etc. They will qualify your acceptance subject to a conferred degree.
hopefulspeechie16 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I'm in the same position as you. Will this affect how upper-division GPA will be calculated for schools that only look at upper-division courses? Will they judge just by Junior level courses?
MarkMc Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 No - I think they'll look at both your overall GPA, as well as current and schedule coursework (have you been academically rigorous getting to this point?)
hopefulspeechie16 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 My freshman and sophomore grades were low but Junior year was a whole different story and it brought my GPA up quite a bit.
SLPgradstudent Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 If your Fall grades are in, they may ask to see those to help make an admission decision. I think schools do look favorably at students who improve their GPAs over the course of the college career. And I think a lot of schools look at the "last 60 credits," so however many semesters it takes to get 60+ credits. Full semesters though, so if you took 13 credits a semester, it would be more than 2 years of classes. Does that make sense?
