Hey guys,

I received an email this morning from Indiana Bloomington, which states that they appreciate our work in putting the application together and also that the faculties are in the early stages of nominating fellowships. It asks us to keep an eye on our applications because they might require additional documents. It also asks us to contact the department if we got offers elsewhere and are going to accept it.

While I feel that this email is super sweet, I also feel confused. Are there any other Indiana Bloomington applicants out there? Have you received this email as well? What does it mean? Generic email to keep in touch with us? Also, it would be great to hear from current enrolled students! Thanks!

Nominations can sometimes take a while and they want to make sure that

a. They don't send out too many offers at once

b. They don't want to have other applicants wait for a chance at fellowships

If you have more than 2-3 offers, it's generally polite to reject whatever isn't a top 3 offer to allow others a chance at funding/acceptances.

Thank you for the insight, I appreciate it! No, unfortunately I don't have 2-3 offers, I have one acceptance but still waiting for funding information. I still feel very anxious and stressed, because I can not afford a phd without good funding. At this point I am simply wondering if they have sent out this email to every applicant or only to a short list. The email was addressed to "Dear Applicants." That's why I am asking if other applicants have received it.

My guess is that you're on a short list and one of a number of possible candidates for a specialized fellowship offered through the grad school or department.  IU has funding issues sometimes, so it would make sense that they would be especially sensitive to trying to figure out if people on a short list are still interested.  I'd take it as a good sign.

Waiting is always the hard part.

Yes it is! It's 11:08 am LA time and I am still in bed checking emails. I SHOULD go to the library, turn in my capstone proposal and read Melville! Arghhhh
