So I built a web app that visualizes uGPA & GRE data from gradcafe survey results.

So I visit this section of the forum fairly regularly cos I'm applying to an Ed PhD program but my background is Information Systems. I built a web app, not sure of how well it works but basically, it takes your search term and searches gradcafe survey results. Then it visualizes the average (using column charts) and distribution (using boxplots) of uGPA, GRE Q/V/AWA by accept and reject.

You can search for anything but the more specific your search is, the less likely you are to get results - not everyone submits their uGPA & GRE scores. I'm open to suggestions, my sense of design is non-existent and I may have made a couple of errors.

The last thing it should do is crash. Maybe not respond (I had that problem but I think I fixed that). Either way, try again maybe? Look for a counter of sorts that counts to 20 pages if you search for something as broad as, say "education".

Errrr, it should move on by itself to a page with about 4 charts - column charts and box plots. That's about it, nothing else. It needs JavaScript to work right so if you're using an older browser maybe(?) or blocking scripts(?), it wouldn't work right. I'd say Chrome should be fine, I think.

Nah, ad block should be fine. PLEASE NEVER TURN IT OFF. I think I know what's going on! You're probably using Firefox, I just got a "NOT FOUND" page, easily fixable.

I did!!! And it went well! That's e x a c t l y the thing!!! How c o u l d they?! After we had such a connection! An academic lady in me feels betrayed and finds comfort in Michigan's lack of good social standing (21st in THE rankings).

OK, so I checked. Given that the boxes are the same in terms of size, the following is true: in Education, you better have 4+ AWA (but that guarantees nothing), 152 or so + Quant. GRE (I've got 154, still proud, having relearnt all that Maths in 2 months), 153+ or so Verbal (I am my own hero here with 165). So the q I keep asking myself - if I am not admitted to anything, should I pass GRE again? - remains unanswered... Looks like anyone who has 152, 154 and 4.0. and above is fine, and the reasons for rejection lie somewhere in CVs and SoPs.

Pretty cool! 

It is easy to visualize that you need high GRE scores to be admitted into History programs but high scores are not as important as one may think: There are equal amount of rejections than admissions.

I stopped overthinking it some time back. I just tell myself these things are absurd black boxes then spend time refreshing grad-cafe . I had a fantastic (in my estimation) interview at Penn yesterday but now I have no idea what that means for admissions purposes.

Yeah, I look around and it appears it's difficult to distinguish accepts from rejects. What I found was, you could tell that some programs favoured Quant over Verbal and vice-versa e.g. History V is generally higher than Q, but then, you'd most likely know this already.

Great suggestion! I thought of this when I started but forgot about it. I think I could easily do a drilldown of the column charts (averages), you click on them then it shows the different scores by A/U/I. The boxplots may require a little more work so may do that now or much later when my current break is over.

I think you can now drill down to see the averages by the applicant location - simply click on any column.
