Grettir Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Hey all, I know the medieval thread from last year was extremely beneficial for that cohort (as well as for me as a lurker!). . . Just wondering if there are any medievalists applying this season. If so, what are your areas of interest? Where have you been accepted/rejected? Historically, my research is focused on early Anglo-Saxon stuff, mostly, but I am also interested in Old English/early Middle English in the 12th century. I'm bent toward linguistic-heavy research, but I am also very interested in emotions and cognitive approaches to medieval lit. I have thus far been accepted to SLU and Fordham and have been rejected from Notre Dame and UCLA. Good luck to everyone this season! unræd 1
unræd Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Congrats on the acceptances--those are some awesome schools! Grettir 1
‘Cat'erburyTales Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Yay another medievalist!!!! I’m also applying this season, mainly looking to specialize with Middle English lit and Arthurian lit. So far, I’ve had one acceptance at WMU and two rejections from UW-Madison and Notre Dame. What other schools are you looking at? Grettir 1
Grettir Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 Hey 'Cat'erburyTales, Congrats on WMU!! That is exciting!!! Yeah, I am waiting to hear from UIUC, UCONN, Cornell, and Stanford. Where else have you applied?

I’ve heard they take a really long time to get back to applicants though. I’ve also applied to IU, UPenn, UMich, and UT-Austin. Grettir 1
revan Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I'm a medievalist, and I've been accepted to SLU as well. I've also applied to Iowa and Notre Dame. I'm toward the end of the alphabet in terms of last name, and I'm wondering about the last initial of those of you who have heard back because I need to know if I should expect a response based on last name. Any thoughts?

Gatsby's Ghost Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Hey all! It's really great to see medievalists going to such an interesting variety of places. Congrats to everyone who's had an acceptance, and to everyone else, best of luck! I was accepted at Cambridge (ASNC) and University College London. Still waiting on Harvard and Oxford, and on the all-important results of funding bodies, without whom I'm going to need to sell some organs to fund this degree... Grettir 1
sarabethke Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Notre Dame will have updated your application already if they've decided to reject you, but you have to first open the application then click to see your application before it will say "you have a new message." They didn't email or anything. I'm waiting to hear from UT Austin, Indiana, Mississippi, and Oregon. I'm not 100% sure what my focus is. I like both Middle English and Old French literature and that sort of exchange between England and France in the 11s and 12s. What I do know is that I'm interested in magic/supernatural/religion in those literatures.

I know you probably applied to work with Mary Hayes (b/c of the magic stuff) at Mississippi, but, and you may already know this, Lindy Brady does a lot of really great stuff with multilingualism in the 11s and 12s too! She was the chair of a conference session I gave a paper at, and she also gave a talk on Irish literature at my current university. I was able to talk with her on both occasions and she is just super cool and gracious, and very approachable! Good luck going on the rest of the season!!

After I saw that people were posting acceptances, I started bracing myself for a rejection notice. I can’t believe they had so many applicants this year - 614 just seems excessive! I saw a few people posting about UMichigan yesterday too, so I’m preparing for another rejection notice potentially. The waiting game is THE worst part of the whole application process!
‘Cat'erburyTales Posted February 20, 2016 Posted February 20, 2016 Just heard back from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and was placed on their wait list. Has anyone else heard back from them?

Historiogaffe Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Yes, me! I'm a medievalist! I'm interested in British history-writing after the Norman Conquest, and the intersections of landscape and memory therein. I'll be attending UBC, up here in Canada. Pretty stoked. Grettir and sstrickland — congrats on your acceptances! And best of luck to everyone else! sarabethke 1
