Speech Language Pathology graduate course requirements

nichole

Question

Hi everyone. I am new here in this forum. I am Nichole from the Philippines. I am interested in taking a Masters program in SLP however my bachelor's degree is Clinical Psychology. I am eyeing to enrol in an online program at Utah State University and will take Pre Masters Program since I do not have any credits for SLP. What are the courses/subjects requirements for Graduate Program in SLP so I would have an idea what to take in my Pre Masters. Thank you!

The schools should have their prerequisites listed on their website and if they don't, you should email them to ask because every school has slightly different requirements.  I don't know Utah's specifically, but in general, most schools will require what southernspeechie listed, with a minor change: you can take chemistry OR physics.

Basically, you need the SLP courses that the individual program requires AND you need to take these courses for all programs as an ASHA requirement:

  • Biology
  • Physics or Chemistry
  • Statistics
  • Psychology
  • and at least one other social/behavioral sciences (like sociology, anthropology, or public health)
  • and consider taking Human Anatomy & Physiology to make your application look even better

See Standard IV information on the ASHA website (http://www.asha.org/Certification/2014-Speech-Language-Pathology-Certification-Standards/)

Eight Prereqs:
1. Speech and Hearing Science
2. Audiology
3. Aural Rehabilitation
4. Anatomy and Physiology of
5. Speech and Hearing
6. Articulation and Phonological Disorders
7. Language Development and Disorders
8. Phonetics
**You also must acquire 25 hours of observation at the clinic**

In addition to the 8 classes in SLP, AHSA (Department in charge of all SLP regulations) requires you to also take the following courses:

1.Statistics
2. Chemistry and Lab (the easy one not the hard one)
3. Intro to Psych
4. Biology and Lab

Hope this helps. I have already been accepted into grad school with only these classes.

Some programs don't require you to gain pre-reqs in SLP classes. They consider you going in as what they call a "leveler." Schools that allow this generally allow you take all those classes the first semester and then continue on regularly after that. My undergraduate was in Journalism and English so I'm planning to go in as a leveler myself. Some schools even allow you to do your observations after admittance but most schools expect it done prior.
Each institution is different though (with the exception of the general requirements of chem, psych, etc.).

If you can't do all those SLP pre-reqs you might also want to take a look at another school or two that doesn't require them for entrance.

I would second the recommendation to check the websites of individual programs you are interested in attending. All of the California schools I was interested in included classes in their undergraduate programs that USU did not; therefore, to be a competitive applicant I had to take additional courses outside of USU. I ended up needing to take three additional classes to be a strong applicant against California students:

  • Voice and Resonance Disorders
  • Fluency Disorders
  • Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology
