clmogel Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Anyone heard from the full time or part time online program? Anyone know when we can expect to hear? Has anyone visited Bowling Green, Kentucky? Or heard something about the program's reputation?
GMT Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 (edited) I haven't heard from them either since I submitted my application. I just get the school's weekly Students at WKU app update info. I was thinking about emailing them this week, just to get an idea when I might hear back. Found this on another post Edited February 28, 2016 by GMT added information clmogel 1
Amanda S Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Western will start to announce the week of March 6-12th
Amanda S Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 I would say the program is competitive.. Out of the approximately 150 applicants for the face to face setting they accept about 24.. Numbers might be different for the different settings. But they have their own speech clinic on campus so if gives your ample opportunities to have your own client(s) and every supervisor is willing to help whenever help is needed. I have thoroughly enjoyed being in the undergrad program. Bowling green itself is a good town. It's got the small town feel of it but they have multiple events throughout the year that are fun to go to and don't make you feel like there is nothing to do. Bowling green has become home to me in the few short years I've been here for school.

Amanda S Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 I go to school there and that's what one of the office people said.. But since it's already this week I'm assuming they are running behind. They could take 8 weeks from the due date to announce
Tommye Hunter Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 An buddy was notified today of her acceptance to WKU's part-time distance program. I know that the first group of people accepted to the regular on campus program have been notified. The second notices go out about two weeks later.
GMT Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 I received my acceptance email to the part time distance program today as well! I am beyond grateful and excited! I only applied to 3 schools and this is the only school I got accepted to, but also the one I wanted the most! Best of luck to all the other candidates! I don't have stellar GRE scores and I was really starting to feel discouraged. Hope this inspires anyone else feeling down about this process!
mrs_walker Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Has anyone heard if notifications have been sent for the full-time distance program?
SLP2Bhopefully Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Wondering this as well... I saw notifications for on-campus and part-time distance, but I am waiting to hear from the full-time distance program also!
amc91 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 (edited) I applied to the full time distance program and I'm still waiting to hear! I also just checked my admission portal and it still reads "graduate pending admission" Edited March 31, 2016 by amc91
amc91 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Just received an acceptance email to the full time online program! SLP2Bhopefully 1

I just want to talk to a student in the program first to get a better "feel". What about you??

I just want to talk to a student in the program first to get a better "feel". What about you?? I'm leaning toward it. I'm waitlisted at MSU, which would be high on my list, too. I just have to really look at the pros/cons of doing a distance program vs. a campus program. I'm a nontraditional student, so I feel like I will fit in better in an online program, and it would allow me to keep working until next summer. However, I'm nervous about finding my own clinical placements. I do think I'm going to decline my EMU acceptance, as their program is seven semesters which I just don't see working for me. So, at this point...yes, I'll accept WKU, but if I were to be accepted at MSU, I'd have some things to consider. If I come across any students who can share their experiences at WKU, I'll let you know!
SouthernDrawl Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 I am also interested in hearing any first hand accounts of WKU's distance program! Congrats to everyone accepted! Let me know if anyone wants to make a FB page for admitted students!

Do you want to IM me a link to your Facebook so I can add you to set it up? I, however, don't know how it should be set up...like, all WKU incoming grad students? Just distance? Just full-time? I may be overthinking this.

So, it may be best just to do one for full time online folks. We can modify it later if need be. I am a high school teacher, so my FB is on crazy lockdown. I don't think you can even see my profile, add me or interact with me if you are not a friend of a friend. Can you send me a link to yours and we can just do the inverse of what you propose? Do you know generally what comes next in the process? A paper packet? Official registration? With the fifteenth looming, I want something set in stone or at least a bit official-feeling before I decline other offers. I have a good deal of anxiety about this! Ah...I totally understand as my husband is a high school teacher! I'll send you a link to my profile. I don't know what comes next in the process...I emailed them some questions yesterday, but haven't heard back yet. I'm not comfortable declining other offers until I get answers to those questions. We have to commit to WKU within 10 days, right?
amc91 Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I received a list of emails from Dr. Dressler for current students in the program, I am going to email them all today. If anyone is interested, I am happy to share any and all information I receive from the students!

SLPPPPP Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Hey everyone! I was also accepted to the full time distance program at WKU. I have so many questions, more questions than answers. How are we supposed to decide in 10 days?!? I was also accepted to UNC online and am wondering if anyone has any insight into the major program differences? experienced_needpaper 1

I was also accepted to UNC online and am wondering if anyone has any insight into the major program differences? The biggest difference in my book is the two year (WKU) vs. three year (UNC) time to completion! I also think WKU does synchronous class meeting through Adobe connect, which I think is really a neat feature. I guess the last big difference would be the residency requirement: 2 weeks in Greeley vs. 6 weeks in Bowling Green. BG is lots closer to home for me (driving distance)!
amc91 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 So I head back from five students in the part time program, and talked to two of them on the phone (still waiting to chat with someone in the full time) but OH MY WORD, they absolutely raved about how incredible the program is! I'll share all that I learned. Basically, the classes are live in the evenings, but I guess most professors record the lectures so if you can't make it to class, you can watch it later (or refer back to the lecture). I was told the professors really go above and beyond to get to know each student and they really want to support you and help you succeed. I was told that the depth of knowledge they are getting from the classes is amazing, and they feel incredibly prepared. One girl said she truly could not have wished for a more amazing program. At least for the part time cohort, the students said they are really close (even though they only have digital interactions). Two people said that there are some group projects, and while they sound bad, they are actually amazing and great learning opportunities. One girl lives in Colorado (like me), and she chose WKU over UNCO (she's doing the three year program) because she did not hear great things about UNCO's program. I spoke to a UNCO student who said the program was fine, but some professors do not record any lectures so there are classes that are basically "self taught", and she said many students in her cohort really dislike the program and feel like the professors are not responsive enough (unreplied emails, things like that). The person I spoke to said she did not have any real complaints, but she know others do. Again, I only talked to one person so this may not be a fair assessment, but I figured I would pass along what I heard. I asked about the preparation for medical versus school settings (I know UNCO seems to be more directed at kids), a couple felt like it was maybe more directed at working in schools, but they also followed it up by saying they know multiple WKU grads who work in medical settings. Another two people said that the program is 100% equal in terms of adult/children. Also, we get to choose our electives, so we will have the opportunity to focus more on our area of interest. Another fun fact, one girl is going to Europe with some of the professors as a "study abroad" opportunity and receiving elective credit! Also, since the professors teach the same courses during the day to the on campus cohort, they will bring up any questions the day time students had (another cool learning benefit). And doing the classes live mean that you get to hear everyone's comments/questions, whereas with asynchronous classes, questions are usually answered in private emails. I obviously sound bias, but I cannot express how incredibly enthusiastic and positive these students were about WKU! I hope this helps! experienced_needpaper, clmogel and SouthernDrawl 1 2
