Refused (?) funding

Hello everyone,

Recently I was admitted to Yale and I am planning on accepting their offer. However, there's one problem, they offer no funding. It is a MA degree and in the letter it is written: "Master of Arts students do not as a rule receive tuition assistance or fellowships. I hope, nevertheless, that you will accept our offer of admission to the Graduate School". I am applying to several external scholarships and I believe the prospects are promising, however, I was hoping for at least some $ from Yale. I come from a middle-income country and any $ I can get would help me and my family immensely. Would it be rude to send an e-mail and ask, if they can offer at least some funding? Would it make any difference? How do I phrase it, so it doesn't come out impolite?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was accepted into a Masters in Public Health program at Yale, and when I called the financial aid office to ask if there's any way to get more funding, the head of financial aid was incredibly rude and he thought that I was lucky to be even accepted to even ask for money. I had $0 from Yale, so everything would've been in loans. All $140,000 of it.

Good luck though, if you find a way.

And congratulations of your acceptance into Yale!

Thanks for sharing your experience, kbui. Apparently they do offer funding to some applicants but I was wondering whether someone has received funding after being previously refused.

If nothing in your circumstances changed, it's hard to imagine that the decision will change. You can try, but I'd be surprised if it worked. MAs are often a main source of revenue for these universities, and funding is limited.

To echo Fuzzylogician, this isn't really about your application specifically- the email says that it's not normal for them to offer funding to MA students.

The fact that some students get it show they are the exception that proves the rule, rather than them being leverage that you can use to get yourself funding. You didn't get refused funding- it's just not part of the normal package, and they weren't able to find any to tack on to your package.
