Hi Everyone,

i'v been studing social sciences and IR since high school and currently hold an M.A. and i'll be starting my PhD in Belgium shortly, but i want to move to the States for my PhD and drop out of belgium after a year, i haven't studied maths for 10 years now, and even then i wasnt very good, i have identified a few programs that don't require the GRE, but is there anything else you might have come across? just in case, my focus is security of the Asia Pacific

the list is short and limited to :

UH Manoa

Idaho State (D.A. but anyhow..)

That doesn't answer your question, but honestly, why would you enter a PhD program knowing that you will drop out? And even more so to transfer to UH Manoa or Idaho? I think any public university in Belgium offers a way better level of instruction and research.

The schools you can get into without GRE scores (in the US at least) will not put you in a good position for the job market. Just take the GRE? There are some respectable schools that will still take you with weak scores if you have an otherwise strong file. Also - US political science is increasingly math driven, so you'll need to have that numeracy anyway (for your career, not just your applications).

If you're really set on not taking the GRE, apply to other European schools or Canadian ones..

thank you for the advice,

i Decided to go for the PhD n Political Science in Belgium, where i come from, a PhD from the US, any university, is respected a lot, more from a PhD in Europes best, and frankly i really like to do some post-doc years at places like Belfer or SAIS, Woodrow Wilson or other American schools which work on China and i thought a PhD from an American school has a better chance of entering the aforementioned places i said then a graduate of a European PhD

also, i do not plan to enter the US Market, i'm more interested in finding a Job in Markets like NZ, Australia, or GCC countries. what are my chances of getting accepted for a Post-Doc in US? they places i looked seemed to favor US PhDs. any thoughts?

I can't speak to Manoa, but I attended Idaho State as an undergrad. I would suggest contacting them about placement. All of the people I knew in the DA program got placed either in good government jobs or teaching at community colleges/private 4 year colleges in the US. They do a good job placing people just based on anecdotal evidence, but without a GRE you might have a hard time getting into the program (they have a scoring system in their application materials that shows under what criteria they accept people). Hopefully this is helpful. You can PM me if you like, I log on about once a week.

I applied to ISU but didn't get offered a spot and funding until August, after I had already accepted here in Montana. My quant scores are pretty awful, but have high verbal and analytic scores. They require you take the test, but don't really look at it if you have a high GPA record. I'm likely to apply there again as a backup school, so I'm glad to hear they have at least some placements.
