Hello all, i am looking for affordable distance education Masters in Islamic Studies. the one offered by the Islamic College in London is distance and can cost around 2750 Pounds, if one gets their 50% tuition scholarship, and they have an instalment program to pay for the rest of it. the final degree will be issued by Middlesex University and its got a Shiite perspective on Islamic Studies this college. i am not going to use the degree for much, just like to have it on my resume, so i am looking for something affordable but not totally useless. are there any other options out there?

Have you had a look at the RMC ( Royal Military Collee of Canada)? from what i recall you could study there as a Civilian and they have a War Studies kind of thing going.=

Dear All, i'm already in the first year of doing a PhD in Security Studies in New Zealand, but been unhappy because of family reasons, my wife has got severe depression because of the rural way of life here, far away from home and no jobs and education for her (an M.A. costs 30K$ for her and no funding where i am) and the job market stinks. so planning to move to Canada where she has relatives and can get scholarships to study - also my current Uni here isnt very high ranked and the academic atmosphere isnt very good either or active- in a department were teaching is more important than research Program: PhD with a focus on Security Studies Schools Applying To: Balsillie PhD or Ryerson PP PhD Interests: Rise of China and Asia-Pacific Security Undergrad Institution: Uni in Middle East Undergraduate GPA: 2.8 Undergraduate Major:English Literature Graduate: M.A. in Indian Studies with IR Thesis, from Iran's top Uni - 3.6 GPA - GRE: not taken, hence the two school option Years of Work Experience:2 years Age: Persian, English (Fluent), Work Experience: 1 year as junior researcher at a think-tank in Iran working on Asia-pacific security - 1 year of T.A at a New Zealand University teaching Middle East and Asia Pacific Security - guest contributor to an Atlantic Council program - Campaign Manager for a Presidential race LORs: 2 from my previous professors in Iran, can write very good letters. maybe one from NZ Publications: a book chapter in persian in a think-tank book - conference paper and a couple of op-ed for the Atlantic council SOPs: can write a good one, i also have a pretty much completed PhD proposal at hand. i was wondering how competitive the PhD at Ryerson and Balsillie are and what are the chances of getting funding? also, do you think my current PhD Status is a positive to the eye of the admission committee or a negative point?

i think the majority of people who entered the course didnt like it, cause when you hear Iranian Studies it has to be more about culture and art and literature whilst this program is more about politics and IR, so i think the hype about an Iranian Stuies M.A. at UT went down as more people came in understood the orientation of the program. also, recent placement have been more chinese students compared to the moreeuropeans in its first years

Dear BFB, i would be ever so thankful if you could give me your feedback on my case. i have been accepted for a PhD in Political Science at a University in Belgium and will start this September, now the thing is that neither my B.A nor my M.A was in political science, i Did my masters in an interdisciplinary field, Indian Studies, but did a IR thesis for that and i'm continuing the research and extending it in my PhD. now i want to be more competitive in job markets (Not the U.S. Apparently) like Europe or Australia/NZ and other places. i was thinking about applying to a Funded M.A., for e.g. there's one in UBC which is funded and its only a year, now my supervisors are okay with me leaving for a year or 18 months and working on my doctorate on the sidelines, so by getting this M.A. in Politics, from a good school, i think i'll have a better chance of obtaining a job, now how do you think admission committee's would look at my case? would the fact that i got into a PhD be a positive factor or a negative one? i'm trying to improve my resume, now i know publishing can do that but having another M.A. in the field that i'm getting its PhD wouldn't hurt either. looking forward for your suggestion

also, i do not plan to enter the US Market, i'm more interested in finding a Job in Markets like NZ, Australia, or GCC countries. what are my chances of getting accepted for a Post-Doc in US? they places i looked seemed to favor US PhDs. any thoughts?

thank you for the advice, i Decided to go for the PhD n Political Science in Belgium, where i come from, a PhD from the US, any university, is respected a lot, more from a PhD in Europes best, and frankly i really like to do some post-doc years at places like Belfer or SAIS, Woodrow Wilson or other American schools which work on China and i thought a PhD from an American school has a better chance of entering the aforementioned places i said then a graduate of a European PhD

i know this is not a favorable option for a lot of US based students, but why take 35k$ debt for an M.A. in Brandeis whilst you could do a Masters, if thats what you really want to do, in Europe's cheap countries, you earn an M.A. and i think the costs would be less and you've done more graduate coursework and a thesis. take for example Freie Berlin, Heidelberg in Germany or Universities in Belgium like VUB, ULB and KU Leuven, they usually have an annual fee of 800 Euro's and the living costs are quiet cheap. the Belgians ask for 620 euros monthly for your living costs.

Hi Everyone, i'v been studing social sciences and IR since high school and currently hold an M.A. and i'll be starting my PhD in Belgium shortly, but i want to move to the States for my PhD and drop out of belgium after a year, i haven't studied maths for 10 years now, and even then i wasnt very good, i have identified a few programs that don't require the GRE, but is there anything else you might have come across? just in case, my focus is security of the Asia Pacific the list is short and limited to : UH Manoa Idaho State (D.A. but anyhow..)

hi guys i have just applied for a PhD in IR to two Australian Universities , U of Melbourne and Deakin with U of Queensland following up, any body knows how things are in down under? you never hear much from Australia here.

mandeley is great, i read it here and have only been using it for around a couple of days but its fantastic, and very user friendly and not complicated unlike Endnote and stuff. 1;you give it your pdf's and papers and stuff 2.check if it got their information out correct 3.install the word plugin and your ready to go

any of the guys here know how the situation is in europe? i have an M.A. in India studies and i am focused on FP and IR, i'm considering Edinburgh's South Asia Studies PhD, Kings College India Research PhD, and CeMIS at Gottingen University on Germany, any ideas?

i dont know specificly about your major,but compared to stirling which is a new institute, durham has the history with lots of old fashioned buildings around the town and the cathedral, kindda like harry potter. nice town all-in-all, all that you cant find in Durham, can be found in newcastle, so get around going back and foward in the tyne-and-wear area.
