This might seem like a nitpicky question to ask, but the POI for my lab called to offer me a fully funded position as a grad student in the clinical psychology PhD program. He left his cell phone number in case I had questions, and he said I could let him know via email or phone of my decision.  Is there a preference?  Should I call to let him know that I am accepting the offer?  I know that this information is important for professors in notifying other students, and at the same time, I know that we are in different time zones, so I don't want to interrupt personal time to notify my professor of my decision.  Any thoughts?

I would make sure you get the offer in writing before you accept. And then I'd probably send an email and leave a message on his office phone.
