Hi

I have been put on wait list for PhD applications in CMU Mechanical Engineering. They say they will give a final decision on or before April 30.

On the other hand, I have an offer , with TA and RA, from Purdue University. They want a conclusive acceptance/rejection from me before April 15.

I would have preferred to go to CMU.

In this case:

1. If I accept Purdue Offer, will it impact my chances of getting into CMU? Do these schools have a consortium or something wherein they know that a certain applicant has already accepted something from another university and hence is not applicable for admission here?

Please advise.

I mean worst case couldn't you accept Purdue and renege if you get into CMU? I'm sure people have done that before. Or you could also try asking Purdue for an extension but you have to word it carefully!

Just know that according to the April 15th resolution, you would need to obtain a written release from Purdue to renege on your acceptance of their offer.

"However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer."
