Baylor College of Medicine Grad School

Does anyone here go to or know about BCM's grad school? especially their immunology program?

I'm in the process of coming up a list of schools to apply to this fall and BCM is currently on my "extra-long list" that I am cutting down.

However, BCM's website is such shit...or for whatever reason I'm just not clicking with their website too well.

Could you guys tell me your opinion about the school?

and then a Dumb Question--

I am having some trouble finding a definitive list of their immuno faculty that has labs.

Is this it?:

https://www.bcm.edu/departments/pathology-and-immunology/research/faculty-labs

They also have this weird search engine thing for their faculty(http://profiles.viictr.org/search/) and when I use this and even narrow down to immunology/assit.prof,asso.prof, prof  I get 115+ faculty..

I would love to hear from people who have applied/looked into Baylor before! Thanks

Hi, I used to work there but not in the immunology department. I will say that BCM culture of the school/department was not a place I enjoyed working (my department was great but the other departments I interacted with had some really bad, sometimes unethical things occurring, from individual PIs or researchers). The work they do is amazing but individuals who work there don't seem to be very happy (probably because pay is total sh*t except for the lucky few). I left a few years ago (to go to grad school elsewhere) and they were talking about changing up some things, so I can't really comment on the current program (sorry). I do know other prospective students who interviewed there and were turned off by the departmental culture.

The work they do there is interesting and good, but I also know a few grad students that are taking an extra year or two to finish than they originally anticipated, and I THINK that may be due to their individual PI's (not the department) but I'm not really sure.

I don't think there's any kind of teaching requirement either (maybe there is now??) but if you are interested in teaching that is something to be aware of. There are a lot of universities nearby though so you may be able to set up some kind of teaching arrangement through them (I know of a postdoc who did this, but not about any grad students).

Wow this is such helpful insight! Thank you so much for responding. I'm so thankful for your comment and relieved that someone agrees with me that their website is just so bad(thank god it's not just me)!

@Diapers, I sent you a private message as I'm not in that program, but I can assure you that my experience at BCM has been incredible. I work with lots of people in different programs, and have not had any bad experiences. The collaborative research environment is great!

The website for the Immunology program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is here: https://www.bcm.edu/education/schools/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences/programs/immunology

Faculty are here: https://www.bcm.edu/education/schools/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences/programs/immunology/faculty

All Graduate Programs: https://www.bcm.edu/education/schools/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences/programs

Note that some faculty who do immune-related things are actually in other departments depending on what they're working on. Lots of people working with viruses are in MVM.
