What's a good computer for grad school?

My computer from undergrad is getting very...old. My question is, what is a good computer for social science grad school? Something reliable, fairly portable, good screen, etc. I'm kind of lost as to what are the 'good computers' these days. I know it's a subjective question, but any suggestions?

ubuntu runs like a breeze even on my three year old laptop. + its free.
