GREAT Statement of Purpose/Letter of Intent advice

Hi Folks, 

I've come across a question in my process of writing this... is it suppose to be in actual letter format? (Dear Admissions Committee, thanking them for their time for reviewing). I looked @ some samples of letters of intent for SLP at my schools career center and this was how most of them were formatted. I had no idea some people were doing this! Is this the right way or should we stick to essay format?

I haven't heard to write in a letter format. I'm going to write all of mine in essay format.
