Time application is due

So, probably not the most responsible. I am almost done with my materials, but I also work a lot. The due date for one of my apps is tomorrow and I am off works so I have some time to refine things. If I turn it in 8:00 pm will that be detrimental? They didn't give a time on the application website I know it's not ideal but I would have the chance improve my materials considerably.

As long as you submit by the deadline, no one cares if it's a minute, an hour, a day, or a week early. Usually if there is no time specified, you may assume that the deadline is the end of the day (11:59pm) local time. If you're not sure, you may want to call/email and ask, so you don't miss the deadline altogether. Do keep in mind that after hours there won't be any technical support and it's not unheard of for systems to crash right before a deadline. That said, you will not be the first or last academic to do things last minute, and it usually works out just fine.

So I submitted my application to UChicago at 11:30 pm Chicago time on the 15th, but the application system says it was submitted on the 16th. I'm assuming the system is set to EST time instead of Central time. There was no note of this anywhere on the website, so I just assumed I should go by the timezone of the University, given that this is what all other universities I applied to expected. I contacted the Director of Graduate Studies regarding the situation. Am I screwed?

I would not worry because if the system says "application submitted on..." that means that it received your application and everything is fine. That's my opinion though, if you are worried and the only thing that will ease your mind is confirmation that you'll still be considered, then you should email the entity that runs the admissions portal (sometimes it's the University-wide Graduate School, and others it's a department-specific portal so then you'd email the department person).
