Hey guys, I wonder how did you check the Columbia application status? Did you use this page:https://admissions.columbia.edu/? I cannot see anything new.

Don't worry, you will be notified when a decision has been rendered on your application. I think if it is positive you will receive a mail from faculty congratulating you, and if not you will receive a generic email saying that a decision has been reached and to check it on the apply yourself page where a link will be available (https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=COL-ENG).

Which one is your prefer? Cornell or NU?

I would say Cornell, but it is a close one. Anyway, since I have not yet been accepted and likely won't, I am not losing too much sleep over this.

Has anyone heard from Cornell IEOR master? I saw a post of acceptance on Feb 22. But I got nothing.....

the acceptance is most likely for PhD ... Master usually get their decision beginning of March. (last year the holy day was 6th March)

Well, I just got acceptance email from Cornell ORIE (Master of Engineering) so I guess they're sending out decisions.

What "top engineering school" did you go to? I find it weird that very few people are willing to be specific about the undergrad school they went to, instead, they use the term, "top engineering school" in their profile...

Because I think different people might have different interpretation of "Top Engineering School"...

Well, because I would prefer not to disclose it for privacy as well as for unbiased purpose. I shouldn't call it top because it is only in top 30 of electrical engineering departments ranked by USNews.

I just got into Cornel ORIE Meng as well (knew the result 2 days ago)... do you know how difficult the admission is comparing to other OR masters program from other school?

For those with low GRE verbal score, don't lose hope. Mine is really low (~400) and I got in :).. I think the reason is because the other parts of my application are very strong. (1 publication in top tier Computer Science conference, 4 papers submitted now waiting for result, numerous leadership experience, recommendation letters from world renown professors, excellent GPA from top 5 US engineering university)

I really regret that I didn't apply to Stanford MS&E because at first I was scared of their high average verbal score.

By the way, anyone here got into MIT Computation for Design and Optimization program? I got rejected from this program, so I am wondering how good you have to be to get in. (They told me that they accepted ~10 students this year)

I think it's relatively easier compared with MIT SM ORC, Stanford MS&E, Princeton MS ORFE. It is probably harder than Columbia MS OR ....

With that many papers, you'd definitely get a very good chance if you applied for Stanford MS&E.

Columbia's MS-OR program has that bad of reputation... ? I think I read somewhere that the best OR programs are MIT, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Cal, Northwestern, GaTech.....

Columbia MSOR class size is like 200+ students. The same goes for Stanford MS&E but it's a much bigger and broader department so 200+ master students is acceptable.

Columbia is famous for their Financial Engineering program, which is very prestigious to Wall Street firms and accepts around 80+ people per class, and usually defers those who couldn't get in to FE program to MSOR program. Therefore, the MSOR at Columbia is considered lesser quality than the FE program, although you get the same professors and could take as much as 70% of the same classes in the FE curriculum. You could potentially learn the same amount as any FE student but as seadub said, you are graduated with an inferior degree from the department so your placement chance as well as attention you receive from professors and the department is less.

Stanford MS&E is more diverse and somewhat like a technical MBA. If your goal is to become a quantitative trader on the street (quants), I think Columbia MSOR is still a better choice compared to other programs. Otherwise, I think any other programs would be better :).

Hi ALL

I am new to this forum. In fact, this would be my first post on any forum. Have managed to get through Columbia (MFE) and Berkeley (MS/PhD IEOR), though I am getting my share of rejections now..[:P]. Interestingly, Columbia seems to be in a hurry to lock up the successful applicants. I am yet to receive the official admission package and they have already asked me to accept or reject the offer by March 1st. This is unusually fast..any thoughts?

Congrats on Columbia MFE :)

When did you get rejection from MIT SM ORC because I am waiting for decision as well :(

I heard Columbia MFE have a huge waiting list so it makes sense that they rush you to decide ......

Consider that there are only 40 graduate students, including MEng/MS/PhD, in the entire ORFE program at Princeton at any one time. That doesn't make anyone's chance at admissions very good.

I got rejection email from Princeton too. Knowing their extremely small size of the their department, I am not surprised that it's so hard to get in. You probably have to be near perfect on every aspect of your application.

I think I am going to request a formal letter from them. I don't like this email communication.
