Masters students contacting professors?

I see everyone talking about being in contact with professors, emailing them as potential advisers, ect. and I was wondering if that is only recommended for PhD candidates? Should masters students do this too? Also what does POI stand for?

You can get in contact with them, but it's not necessary. When I was looking into my masters program, I contacted a prof and visited him on campus. It's less of a concern for most masters/advisor relationships because many students don't know who their advisor would be for their thesis yet, and some masters programs don't even have a thesis requirement. But, if you have specific questions for a potential advisor, go ahead and contact them.

POI stands for person of interest or professor of interest - basically a prof you're interested in working with.
