_alyssaryan_ Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Just got my first "rejection" from Buffalo via the website. Status was "Under Review" - changed to "Reject" with a date of 2/16/2010.
tortola23 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Mine still says "Not Reviewed"! ARGH. Does anyone else still have this status?
Branwen daughter of Llyr Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Mine still says "Not Reviewed"! ARGH. Does anyone else still have this status? All of mine still say "submitted".
subzoo Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) Mine still says "Not Reviewed"! ARGH. Does anyone else still have this status? I still have "not reviewed." Am I the only one not too worried about it? I just figured we survived the first couple waves of rejections and have a shot at admission. And come to think of it, there have only been three acceptances reported - doesn't that leave quite a few spots? ...But I may tend to view SUNY Buffalo too confidently because I'm from Buffalo (we just call it "UB" here), and its undergraduate programs are fairly easy to get into. I wish everyone I know knew that its English PhD program is extremely competitive. Edited February 18, 2010 by subzoo

Someone on the results board posted that there were 11 funded spots available this year, so if that info is accurate they may very well still have some admits to hand out.
subzoo Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Kind of off-topic, but to SUNY Buffalo applicants, did you all receive that e-mail about UB Graduate School information sessions? I'm assuming that was sent to all applicants, but I figured it's worth checking to see if it's not a sign at likely admission.

What is your online status at the application site? Mine is still "not reviewed" and it's driving me nuts.

I was accepted but I don't think I ever got one! Weird.

I really shouldn't have even mentioned that e-mail - it probably caused unfounded anxiety. It just occurred to me that they probably sent it to me because I'm from Buffalo, so they figure going to an informal info session would be feasible for me, while for out-of-towners it would be silly to travel for a two-hour event. I'm almost positive it was sent to all local applicants - it says it's for "prospective students and applicants to our graduate programs." Sorry for the false alarm.
U4RiiA Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Someone on the results board posted that there were 11 funded spots available this year, so if that info is accurate they may very well still have some admits to hand out. I was the poster who gave the figure. It was included in the very nice rejection letter I received on Tuesday. They said they had over 220 applications for 11 funded positions.

But I have not received an email or a phone call regarding the decision. I definitely hope this is not an unfunded position as that wont translate into good news for me. I hope this news is confirmed in tandem with a funding package. Anyway, they are at least still informing, so there is bound to be more offers coming up. Good luck to everybody else who is waiting.
tortola23 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Is it possible that they're moving alphabetically? I still have "not reviewed" and my name begins with an S.
prognosis Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Is it possible that they're moving alphabetically? I still have "not reviewed" and my name begins with an S. No, I don't think it is the alphabet. I have a vague feeling it is the departmental slot or field for which they have specific acceptances and waitlists. My name begins with a D and my field is postmodern lyric poetry, basically poetics
subzoo Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 There seems to be some etiquette against asking this question, but do those of you who got into SUNY Buffalo mind sharing some of your credentials? i.e. GPAs, where you got your B.A., GRE scores, that kind of thing? Can't help but be curious about that. strokeofmidnight 1

Can't help but be curious about that. My credentials would not help as they are absolutely incommensurable with the profiles one sees here but am giving it anyway. GRE Verbal: 720, Do not have a 4 point GPA as my entire academic history is located in India. We have a 6 point scale in our university. Good grades but can't imagine Adcoms being able to tell either way cos our grading system is so different. The only parts of my application they could have evaluated were my SOP, reccos and writing sample. Undergrad was done in economics, got MA and Mphil in English literature. My SOP was centered around lyric subjectivity and postmodern poetry. I am sure this does not help but thought I'd respond to your request. Good luck with all your applications, I am sure there are a few spots left for Buffalo (going by gradcafe results, I would think around 4 are left of the stipulated 11). Can't help but be curious about that. I'll share mine, but please note that I really don't think it was my numbers that got me accepted, so I don't know that this info will be helpful for you. SUNY Buffalo especially seems to go much more by writing sample, SOP and research interests when they consider applications. That said, GRE scores were 690V, 610Q, 4.0 GPA in my major and 3.9 overall, did my undergrad at a very small and unknown liberal arts college in the midwest.
subzoo Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Has anyone else still not received any word from SUNY Buffalo?
johnnyleston Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 still no word here. waiting to hear back from rutgers, buffalo, & cornell.
tortola23 Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Has anyone else still not received any word from SUNY Buffalo? Me. My web application status is still "not reviewed" and I haven't had an email, a phone call, nor a letter. Anybody else?
johnnyleston Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 i just had a brief IM conversation with graduate admissions at SUNY Buffalo. they assured me that they are still reviewing applications. so i expect to see some more acceptances, maybe even my own, sometime soon. fingers crossed.

subzoo Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 To SUNY Buffalo applicants: it's a little late for this now, but, when you check your status on the website, does it tell you whether or not your supporting documents have been received? Mine only says "not reviewed," but it says on the "Help" page that it should also inform you of the receipt of supporting documents.

Mine only says "not reviewed," but it says on the "Help" page that it should also inform you of the receipt of supporting documents. Mine also says "not reviewed", and I just had to call the department to confirm the receipt of all my documents. That page tells you NOTHING. Nearly all of my schools don't update their online stuff, yet when I've called, they've all always received everything. Very annoying.
subzoo Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Thanks, relieved to hear that. Incidentally, a theory of mine, based on the fact that Buffalo is apparently still reviewing applications, despite having made a number of decisions already: maybe some of these schools reserve one last wave of decisions, to be made after they've gotten some idea of how many of the accepted students will actually be enrolling. That way, instead of making, say, 10 offers of admission and 30 waitlistings, they can decide that, since they've already got 6 people enrolling, they'll only need to waitlist 15 people or so. In any case, as I've said elsewhere, it seems strange to me that the adcoms can have finalized their decisions when they don't even know how many of the students they've accepted will be enrolling - unless they have a huge waitlist, but in general there are very few waitlistings reported on the results page. I've certainly lost some faith in the reports about schools having finished making offers, because I personally contacted a DGS at a school reported to be finished, who said they were still reviewing apps.
tortola23 Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Just emailed the department to ask if they're doing any notifications soon. They've had the apps forever and they've probably finished with their decisions, so I think they need to process everything and notify everyone. Kind of sick of not being able to plan the next year of my life because they can't be bothered to send some automated emails.
