ElKel87 Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 I posted this in the main section of grad cafe under "The Bank" but haven't gotten a response yet so posting here as well... I'm in the process of applying for unsubsidized stafford and grad plus loans. As part of that process I need to fill out a promissory note. I started that today, but noticed they ask for my employer's information. While I work full time now (in a different industry), I'm planning to quit at the end of the summer before I start school full time. My current employer does not know that... Does anyone know if they will contact my employer if I give their info? If they do contact them to verify my employment, will they tell them it's because I'm applying for student loans (assuming yes)? I wasn't planning to give notice until after my vacation at the end of July since my last day in the office would be right before labor day.
melars Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Frankly, I'm not sure if this was correct or not, but I'm in the same position. Since I am not planning on working (literally quitting here within a few weeks), I put down that I am not employed full time. Hopefully that wasn't the totally wrong thing to do, but I didn't want my full time employment and paychecks to make it look like I will have the same financial status as when I'm in school... Hopefully that helps and doesn't steer you in any wrong direction!!
Speechster Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I think you will be fine. Loans at the grad level are not income based.
ElKel87 Posted May 25, 2017 Author Posted May 25, 2017 @melars You should be fine! I was able to get in touch with the financial aid office at my school and they told me they will not contact my employer and they don't even look at that information. (His exact words were actually "Don't worry, your secret is safe with us." )
melars Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 @elkel87 haha that's awesome! I figured it wouldn't be that big of a deal either way. I already told my employer I was leaving, I just didn't want it to make an impact on how much I got in loans... but it seems like it really wouldn't anyway! Thanks!!
