Thoughts on housing

Hi everyone! What is everyones thoughts on living with people in your program versus not in your program?

I've heard that it really depends on the type of person you are. I feel like both could have positives and negatives. If you live with someone in your program, you're going to be with this person 24/7 and they could be your support system through the program. It's a live in study buddy and accountability partner. On the other hand, you're with this person 24/7 and if your personality doesn't mesh well, it could lead to a stressful life with no outlet. I don't need a roommate but my friends all opted out of living with cohort members. They did choose to room with other "stressful and demanding" majors though (nursing, pre med, OT, PT) so that they understood that when they were studying the roommate wouldn't just have a party, sort of thin

I second what the poster above said. Live with people who at least have the same goals for school as you and can relate. I was supposed to, but i got stuck with undergrads who are not that serious about school and its been a roller coaster all year. Definitely not worth the added stress.

@kayyyyy_ @Speechster thank you for the advice! I am leaning towards living with someone from another graduate program. Do you guys have any ideas on how to go about that?

You could contact the program admin assistant and ask, or try to join their Facebook group, or craigslist of some sort

Love this thread! Such awesome advice as I am weighing whether to have a roommate or not and whether in the same program or not!

I agreed with @kayyyyy_. I opted out of living with someone from the same cohort and am choosing a medical student instead.

I think I'll end up living with someone also, but I don't really want them to be in my cohort either! It's just cheaper to have at least one other roommate. I'm hoping Craigslist will have some other grad programs looking for roommates.
