katalytik Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I wanted to start a thread to post acceptances/rejections to have others find out and ask any questions. This is me: RESEARCH: information technology, quality of care, and policy (organizational, and governmental) DEGREE: PhD ACCEPTED: Johns Hopkins (PhD, Health Management & Policy). Given funding (AHRQ), and assigned to Jonathan Weiner DrPH as my advisor. I've also been connected to Peter Pronovost MD, PhD PENDING: Harvard, University of Michigan
ridgey Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Not sure if my results will be helpful because a lot of my applications weren't public health. I'm still waiting on 7 (!) results (one of them is an assumed rejeciton though) so will post later when I have all the results to hand. My sense is that public health is less about the numbers (GPA and GRE) than other fields, and far more about the research niche. Do others agree?

I agree that the MPH is likely less about numbers, and more about work experience and future focus. But I think once you get to the PhD level, then the numbers come back. I think that's because PhD programs pretty much get a lot more people applying per open spot than MPH programs ---- of course, mainly due to the fact that PhD programs cover funding etc. At the same time, I could be wrong and it could be different in different schools. What they weight more, how they look at experience etc.
avadhani Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 What is your gpa and how much did you score in your gre??
katalytik Posted February 24, 2010 Author Posted February 24, 2010 What is your gpa and how much did you score in your gre?? My GPA is around 3.8; 740/700 (Q/V). But I don't think this is out of the ordinary of the schools I am trying for. I am sure there are people with much higher numbers... it really does have to do with overall application (resume, experience in the field, letters of recommendation, essay, fit with program etc.)

I've been thinking about a PhD down the road, but have a while to decide. My stats: Applied for: MPH in health policy & management at Berkeley & Columbia; MPA in health policy & management at NYU Accepted: Columbia Pending: Berkeley, NYU GRE: 710Q/570V/6AW GPA: 3.2 overall; 3.4 & 3.6 in majors (public health & mass comm) Background: worked in health journalism and nonprofits during college; health policy thinktanks for 2 years post graduation, almost 2 years in China in a completely different industry I agree that the numbers probably don't matter so much in the master's programs. My GRE score wasn't exceptional by any means, and the main reason why I didn't take it again because 100 points more on my verbal probably wouldn't have made a difference to the AdComms. The story I got from a lot of people in MPH and MPA programs was that the verbal score matters a lot more if you aren't a native English speaker... Edited February 24, 2010 by hipopotam

I am thinking about a faculty position maybe in a medical school or a business school. I have worked for several years in clinical medicine, and have a business background (in software)

I am actually attending Dartmouth this fall. I am so excited. Yes, the faculty are "big timers" and the students have done some very interesting things. Helps that the new president in Public Health.
matilda Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 I see that a lot of you are getting accepted....to most of the schools I applied, and that see like a distant dreams to me, still. What were your subjects of research? What was THE IDEA that you think was crucial for your acceptance? Thanks!
