anglophile Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Since we're all posting our results, I got into the PhD program at UVA (specializing in Victorian poetry). First acceptance, and it was my top choice.
nycnyc Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 How are people hearing these acceptances? Email, phone, mail? Haven't heard any yeses or nos yet, but just want to know what to expect.
pnagy01 Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Today, I found an acceptance letter in the mail from Lehigh. It's only a back-up school, but a safety net, at least, under this tight-rope act. How's it going out there?
dedalus Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Congratulations, that's great! I got into Pitt today, so it's looking like a good day for VU.
warmclay Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Congrats to all. So dedalus, you've heard from pitt have you? Excuse me while I find the nearest bridge...
warmclay Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Thanks totallyfreakingout. I was thinking of taking up pole dancing, but gambling seems a great deal less...involved...good call. Lets see now, I've been rejected from WashU (assumed) and Northwestern and am being ignored by pitt. Two and a half down, eight and a half more to go. Anyone up for a game of poker?

Russian Roulette would be more fitting today....one empty chamber, please.
whentostop Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 Does anyone else feel as if there were a copious amount of results coming in from a variety of English programs, and now, with the exception of a few schools, we are in some sort of calm before the tornado of rejections come? I dare say, I feel a bit like I'm outside a Kansas farm house, feeling the electricity of devastation, hairs on end, everything calm except my heart, and hearing a small voice in the back of my head saying anybody with half a brain would be in a bomb shelter right now.

I know, I know. I think we're in the weird limbo stage...maybe we've made it to round two of consideration, but after this week, the poo hits the fan. Not quite bomb-shelter worthy, but I might at least shield my face from flying feces.
dedalus Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 If you log in to NU's application, it will say "A Decision Has Been Made." But if you didn't get called, it's a rejection.
bluewhisky Posted February 16, 2008 Author Posted February 16, 2008 Bluewhiskey, Boston University or Boston College? boston university....although why i bothered to apply ANYWHERE remains a mystery to me! rejected by duke (swift and clean like an amputation) and there hasn't been a peep from any others...apart from stanford who very helpfully sent out an email saying "all successful applicants will be notified by phone on the 29th of Feb....rejections will be sent by mail"....and now i wait & wait, the axe is being polished, sharpened..and soon it shall fall. im standing in line before the guillotine.

But doesn't UNC do rolling admissions, so acceptance is based more on when they get to your app, rather than all the acceptances going out at the same time?
aowens2 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Hey All, Since the chaotic flury of decisions has started and I've been pushed to within an inch of my sanity I thought "wouldn't it be great to have a support network?" I'm finishing up my B.A. this semester and this is my first crack at applying to Ph.D. programs, so I'm not really expecting to get in anywhere this time around. If I do it will be a really amazing surprise. Is anyone else interested in studying The Victorian Novel? Good luck to everyone!
bluewhisky Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 hey cauldron...so sorry to hear about northwestern u still have about 8 more schools to go right? there will be good news soon for you...just hang in there. of course the lesson to be learnt here is "do not leave the bar".
pnagy01 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I'm not positive that UNC has rolling admissions. I'm worried simply because the deadline for financial-aid-seeking applicants was Dec 1. More than two months later, they still haven't replied to my application, which, I feel, does not bode well. Of course, these anxiety-ridden facts are compounded by the feeling that my chances for UNC weren't very strong to begin. Who knows?
bluewhisky Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 I should just camp out at the bar through all of February. Avoiding the finality of the plethora of "implicit rejections" I've been accumulating this week...Cornell, UChicago...urg. On the bright side, I think I've made a decision on where I'm going (BC!) so that's exciting...I'm going to visit in March before I sign my name in blood. How's it racking up for you? oh that is exciting! what exactly are you looking to specialise in? my life is strangely and not so amusingly beginning to resemble waiting for godot. absurd to say the least. i still haven't heard anything (apart from duke)....i'm hoping no news is good news? or maybe not. i just want this to be over!
LukeKY Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 So, just got my first rejection...damn you, Buckeyes, damn you!! It hurts...
GinaMae08 Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 ? WUSTLÂ why must you taunt me so?!?!??! Got waitlisted and waiting daily to hear something from FSU, UGA, Vanderbilt. I check the damn results page on here every morning, it's become part of my daily routine!!!! C'mon people, I gotta plan my life....geez :? :x
schamber Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I've disappeared for awhile, but thought I'd come back to post results: Accepted: Berkeley (with funding!) UCSD (have yet to hear about funding) Rejected: Northwestern (?!) WUSTL English and Comparative Lit. Waiting: UChicago (although I hear they've already sent acceptances) Yale Princeton Comparative Lit. Harvard Stanford (won't notify until Feb. 29-March 1)
Southeast Penn Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Got the same rejection from the Buckeyes. I've now been rejected by OSU three times (one MFA, two PHD). Maybe I can get an extra paragraph on my form letter explaining why I'm not Buckeye material this time, hmm?
schamber Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Northwestern are being pretty unpredictable this year...I got denied, too, and really thought I'd be in there easy - one of my recommenders was an alum, I'd visited a few times and they treated me really well, some great phone convos earlier on in the process with professors, etc. Strange. Don't let it get to you too much! Well, I'm glad to hear that this isn't just my experience. My recommenders thought this one was a sure bet for me, and even advised me that they thought I was a bit overqualified and should set my sights higher. I know that the rankings really don't mean much, but I think there's something pretty bizarre about getting into super-competitive Berkeley with fellowship funding and not even getting shortlisted/interviewed at Northwestern. Unfortunately, it was my first implicit rejection, and led me to conclude all sorts of nasty things about my qualifications for graduate study. Then Berkeley came in, and it was all good again.
picklejar Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I just got an acceptance to UMass-Amherst. This is the best school so far that I've heard back from, although I'm still waiting on my top three programs. Yep: UMass, Kansas, Southern Illinois Nope: nobody (!) Waiting: Rice, Vanderbilt, WUSTL, Nebraska, Harvard, Purdue, Georgia, Loyola, Ohio, Iowa
bluewhisky Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 and it's another week gone without hearing a thing really, do they think i have nothing else to do but sit around and check my email all day??!! bah. humbug.
Minnesotan Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 *commiserates* All I have is a single rejection from Valentine's Day, still. I could really use some good news about now. My thesis work is suffering.
