Indiana University or University of Colorado

I have been accepted to both Indiana University and the University of Colorado. I know that IU has a slight edge in prestige, but Colorado is really nice. My research interests are some what varied. I am interested in PDE, scientific computation, and combinatorics. If any one has any input it would be much appreciated.

I dont know much about them in terms of mathematics as I do statistics, but I have been living in Indiana for two years and I cant stand it here. No natural beauty, the weather is terrible, but the people are nice. I would say go to Colorado. You are going to be living there for 5+ years, so might as well make it a good place to be. IU's campus is beautiful, but Colorado as a whole is beautiful.

nalineback: I would vote for IU. IU's campus is beatiful, it's located in a nice college town (so if you want a big city, don't go there) but Indianapolis only an hour away. As I alluded to, Lake Monroe & Brown County are nearby areas that are nice for camping/hiking/canoeing/etc. However, if you're into snow sports Colorado obviously gets the edge.

Sorry for my biased reply, I go to Purdue, and as you know West Lafayette isnt the greatest of places. I agree with you, IU has a beautiful campus, and even though they are a few hours south of here, their weather is milder than here. The winters here are brutal with the lake effect and all. But what is cool is that Chicago is only 2 hours away and I think it is a great city.

I am inclined toward UC as they seem to have an overlap with your interests and I have a vague notion that IU is a slave driver (yet I do not recall why).

However, call them up and ask to be flown out.

I have already visited both places. Thus, I have been acquainted with the quality of life in the respective towns and the general atmosphere. I also have professors in mind that I would like to work with at both schools. The problem is I like both schools very much. I am more interested in people's perceptions about the effectiveness of the schools because unfortunately that will affect my ability to get a good position after finishing.
