  1. This could be interesting. I'll be on the lookout for this on the 15th.
  2. Agreed. I just want my girlfriend to have common sense and the ability to hold an interesting conversation. My ex-girlfriend studied fine art, which I know nothing about, but she was very interesting to have conversations with. She would have interesting conversation topics, and loved to experience new things. No MTV fan chick, is basically what Im asking for.
  3. You have what it takes to get into a stats PhD program no problem, its the top-20 part which might be a little issue. You seem to have alot of math background ,which is what stats programs look for, as well as a computing background. The reason I say the top-20 part is hard is becuase you have to think about the other students who will be applying for the same program. Alot of them have done pure math or statistics in undergrad, and some have masters degree's in statistics as well(most of the internationals do). But I would say definately go for it. I would be shocked if you didnt get into atleast one top-20 program with funding. As for the MS/PhD program, I am almost sure you would get into most of those which you apply you. But given your background, you are ready to go straight into the phd.
  4. Well, a staff member sent me an email and told me they are starting to make decisions and we should know soon. This is for the statistics phd.
  5. Hey kowtown, you mind sharing the link or the list itself of the 1993 NRC stats rankings?
  6. I dont quite understand your post. I dont know why they would tell you that without knowing your GPA or GRE scores. For all they know, you could have failed the classes you told them you took. Maybe some key words set them off, like you telling them what classes you took and that you said you did well in them. So I guess I would take their word for it as they know more about the situation then we do.
  7. I did apply for it. Once I had submitted my application, a few weeks later the graduate director sent me an email advising me to fill out an app for the training grant once she had seen my credentials. At that point, I thought I was good to go. But I guess they just didnt like something about my profile, or maybe they got much stronger applicants. Good luck to the rest of you.
  8. GRE: 580verbal/780math/5 analytical GPA: Undergrad: 3.2 overall but a 3.9 in my math minor from a big state school. Graduate: 3.8 M.S. in econometrics from a very well known state school.
  9. UNC is pretty much the highest ranked school you listed for biostats. The thing with Boston U is that I know a professor that got a phd in Economics from Boston U (he did time series), and he said that Boston U's biostat program isnt that strong. He states that Boston's math/stat department isnt very strong, hence why he states what he says. Besides that, I have heard good things about Pitt and WashU in terms of biostat. Oh, and South Park rules.
  10. I got accepted too, but it seems like I will not have funding for the first year. Maybe some sort of tuition waver, but no stipend.
  11. Well, in terms of recognition, Purdue is known for all things Engineering and Science. From all over, people recognize Purdue for turning out some amazing Engineers, Chemists, Pharmacists, and Biologists. The grad life is pretty good. There are alot of organizations with tons of activities always going on. Alot of us head over to Indianapolis or Chicago every now and then for some fun. Some even go down to Kentucky or over to Ohio for concerts, sporting events and so on. The Engineering end of the campus is massive, with many buildings connected via skywalks or tunnels. So in terms of program, you are covered. I think Purdue has all its engineering graduate programs in or near the top 10.
  12. First off, the weather is miserable here. Winter seems to drag on forever here. You can go WEEKS without seeing the sun because it is always overcast. Very cold winters and very very windy. The highs maybe in the 20's and 30's, but once you factor in the wind chill, its in the 10's. Summer is very humid and it always rains in the spring. Fall is about the only nice time of the year, and it only lasts for a month or two. On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 1.5 in terms of weather. I guess Siberia is worse. As far as the international population here, it is very big and diverse. People from all over the world. The undergraduate population is no where near as diverse. About 90% of the undergrads are from the midwest, whereas I would say 10% of the gradaute population is from the US as a whole. The campus is huge and stretches for miles. I would recommend off campus housing, as it will be cheaper and be a better place to live. I would do my best to try and stay in West Lafayette. Lafayette may be just over the river, but everything you need is in West Lafayette and there is much much more bus services in West Lafayette. Plus ,the closest part of Lafayette to campus is downtown Lafayette, which is very expensive to live in. If you can find a room mate, expect to pay around $400/month to live in West Lafayette.
  13. Sorry for my biased reply, I go to Purdue, and as you know West Lafayette isnt the greatest of places. I agree with you, IU has a beautiful campus, and even though they are a few hours south of here, their weather is milder than here. The winters here are brutal with the lake effect and all. But what is cool is that Chicago is only 2 hours away and I think it is a great city.
  14. I dont know much about them in terms of mathematics as I do statistics, but I have been living in Indiana for two years and I cant stand it here. No natural beauty, the weather is terrible, but the people are nice. I would say go to Colorado. You are going to be living there for 5+ years, so might as well make it a good place to be. IU's campus is beautiful, but Colorado as a whole is beautiful.
  15. Hey guys, when you say you are going to call, who are you calling exactly? Just the most general department number you can find, or the graduate chair, or who? I want to call UCLA and see what the hell is going on.
  16. Any hear anything yet? An email or even a phone call that someone picked up? I dont even want to bother sending an email seeing that they must be flooded.
  17. I applied to there Statistics program and have heard nothing back. At first, one of the graduate admin. staff members would answer all my emails, but as of late, they have answered none. Granted I only sent one email since January, Im guessing they are swamped.
  18. Thanks for the info and advice ebaronov , but I know about the results archive. I actually check it many times a day! I guess ill just have to sit tight and wait. Good luck with all your applications!
  19. Ive applied to a handful of schools for Stats or Biostats, schools like Purdue (highest ranked school I applied to), Boston U, UCLA, UC Davis, Arizona State, and a few others. Havent heard anything from them and I am starting to get worried. I feel like Im not going to get into any school, let alone get in with funding.
